He can make all the throws required to win the game (NOT all the throws he used to be able to make. His accuracy has been off on some deeper balls however, and by that I mean he's been over-throwing the receivers. Who is better Von Miller or Chris Harris? During this drive he threw the ball 3 times and connect on two of them. That moved the team 38 yards. Both passes were first downs. The drive was capped off by a rushing touchdown. The Broncos gave up 8 plays of more than twenty yards 7 of those came through the air and one came on a reverse. Patriots 18 at Broncos 20 Manning led 2 touchdown drives. One from the NE 16 and one from his own 17. He played a more significant role on these touchdown drives. 17 QB Hits, 10 Passes Defended, 2 Int, 1 Fumble and 4 Sacks for the Broncos defense The Broncos gave up 4 plays of more than twenty yards all through the air. Analysis The Steelers fared significantly better than the Patriots. After a lot of film a few things were clear. The Patriots offensive line may have been terrible, but the Broncos edge rushers were better against the Patriots than they were against the Steelers. This being said they definitely had more of a problem with a guy who can move and is huge like Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers have a lot more "speed" than the Patriots who have more agile players that get open with little moves, while the Steelers just have fast guys. Martavis Bryant consistently got open in the intermediate range and was the one to burn the Broncos for 40 yards on a reverse. The Patriots couldn't put much together and it was clear from the get go that Brady wasn't quick enough to make up for his line. One thing that might rustle some jimmies, the Broncos did not appear to be as physical as advertised. They were physical do not get me wrong, they hit hard and often, they just weren't as physical as expected. Also statistically they are the same in the postseason as they were in the regular season. This lends to the idea that the Broncos have not improved during the postseason. On the offensive side of the ball the Broncos performed better against the Patriots. (even though they scored less) The Broncos offense was more helter skelter against the Steelers. Manning was 21/37 with drops all over the place. Manning during the Patriots game seemed more healthy and closer to his former self than we have seen in awhile. The Broncos have scored an average of 21. 5 which is not far off from their season average of 22. 2 Play Off Matches:PANTHERS Seahawks 24 at Panthers 31 Panthers jump out to a quick start by scoring on their opening drive and the Seahawks opening drive. Panthers scored on their first 4 drives Defense picks off Russell Wilson twice(Wilson threw 1 in last 7 games of the season. Seahawks score 24 unanswered points in the second half. Cardinals 15 at Panthers 49 Carson Palmer had 6 turnovers Panthers score on their first 3 drives Carolina dominated this matchup. Analysis The Panthers came into the postseason with one loss and made it clear out of the gate they weren't to be trifled with. They scored 24 points against the top scoring defense and the #2 defense in yards, in the first 2 quarters. On top of that they have 9 takeaways against two of the premiere offenses in the league. Defensively the Panthers front four obliterated the Seahawks offensive line that was not a true strength of the team and the Cardinals offensive line which pitted a strong interior vs a strong defensive tackle group. The defense as a whole looked better and produced at a higher statistical clip against a top flight offense. The main concern is the fact they gave up a large halftime lead. While some of the play calling was conservative there were moments when the Panthers could have halted the Seahawks momentum and simply couldn't do it. They held the #1 offense in yards to 15 points and On the offensive side of the ball the Panthers are just as dominant. They have averaged 40 points per game in the playoffs. The main concern is the offense slows down as it approaches the final quarter. Something else that may affect how the game plays out is the offense is as physical as the defense and hits opponents defenses in the mouth very quickly which may lead to injuries on either side. Players to Watch: Mike Tolbert Little talked about, little in height, big in dance moves and big in the belly Mike Tolbert is a perfect example of not judging a book by the cover. Tolbert sits at 5'9" and 243 lbs. He also has moves that make teams rethink contracts Tolbert may not be the biggest name player on the offense but the Panthers use him in such a variety of ways that he is indespensible for the offense. He can receive out of the backfield, he can pick up the short yardage and he can make a man miss. In this game his main goal will be to help Newton stay upright and then to leak to the flats as a safety valve. Von Miller and Demarcus Ware will be blitzing often and Tolbert is among the best at sneaking past the blitz for FB screen plays. Von Miller Do we need to say more than his name? Picked second overall in the 2011 draft(you know who got picked first) he has been a cornerstone for the Bronco's organization and defense. His pass rushing ability stems from his elite speed and size. Imagine that, a big fast dude is great at tackling. Miller amped it up against Tom Brady last week and had his way all day. Miller is not as good in coverage as other linebackers and is known to miss an occasional tackle(6 missed tackles and 30 total tackles. Make no mistake he delivers a devastating hit each and every time he hits something( just as this dummy) Miller is a player to watch because of his playmaking ability. What makes him a must watch is the fact he has to sack Cam Newton who is huge and fast, these two will dance plenty and it will be fantastic to watch. Devin Funchess Yeah, this isn't Ted Ginn. Sorry. Ted Ginn will be lining up opposite Chris Harris Jr. for the majority of the game. This doesn't mean Ginn won't be a factor but it is likely that Ginn is used as a decoy frequently because he will occupy Harris and a safety covering him deep in case Harris gets outright beat like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie did a few times. This leaves a lot of space for Greg Olsen, Philly Brown and Devin Funchess to run around and try to beat their defender. More than likely Devin Funchess will be lining up across from Bradley Roby. This means Funchess will be tasked with using double moves and boxing out the smaller Roby. When Roby is not on Funchess Aqib Talib will be. This presents an interesting matchup because Talib is bigger and quick enough to keep up with Funchess. Regardless, Funchess has been a key cog whenever Newton has a big game Funchess gets a TD and produces at important moments. C. J. Anderson Anderson is the key to the Broncos. What don't believe me? When Anderson rushes for 105 yards or more the Broncos are undefeated. (9-0) Anderson is a must watch for the simple fact that if Kuechly and company limit his production and force Manning to take to the air often and on predictable downs(3rd and long) they are more likely to force mistakes and takeaways. This means Anderson is the most important offensive player. If Anderson can give Manning manageable down and distances Manning can play mind games. If Anderson can't get anything going Manning will have to pull out some magic to stay clean. Shaq Thompson Hypothetically Thomas Davis won't play every defensive down in the Super Bowl. We will stay away from the hypothetical from here on out because Thompson will still start just not in TDs place. Shaq Thompson has secretly been phenomenal this year. He actually graded out higher than Thomas Davis according to profootballfocus. He will be tasked with hitting Anderson hard and keeping Owen Daniels in check at times. Ever so often he will rush Manning and may or may not get to him. Basically Thompson is a jack of all trades whose main weakness is going for the big blow every time he has a tackling opportunity. Thompson's physicality is a microcosm of the Panthers' defense as a whole. He will be very important especially if Davis cannot handle the pain throughout the full game. Brandon Marshall Brandon Marshall is the run stopping king of Denver. Well okay, Von Miller and Derek Wolfe have more of an impact on the running game but Brandon Marshall is the key ingredient that keeps opponents from breaking long runs up the weak Denver interior. (Weak is relative here folks) Marshall will be tasked with keeping Mike Tolbert, Cam Newton and Jonathan Stewart from breaking out a huge run up the middle. On top of this Marshall will be paired with Danny Trevathan to lock up the middle of the field. This is incredibly important because their main job will be to limit short throws that are often used to beat blitz happy defenses. Marshall is a must watch because like his friend Brandon Marshall, he is integral to his team's success and will need to play big in order for them to win. HONORABLE MENTIONS: Yes we understand Cam Newton is the main man to watch, both from an entertainment perspective and an actual football perspective. We are trying to focus on players not highlighted as often here. Some will say Von Miller is talked about plenty, but the reason we brought up a section on Miller is we did not focus specifically on the Broncos pass rush later in the post. Newton: An honorable mention for the more than likely Super Bowl MVP(Assuming the Panthers win) seems like a bad way to go right? Well read above for why he isn't a main focus. Cam Newton will have to dance his way into the end zone early and often to keep the Broncos' defense on their heels. If he can read the defense and adjust protections accordingly, the offense should run smooth enough to score points. Key word is should, no amount of perfect planning will be able to fully beat a pass rush like the Broncos' and that will always be factored in. Cam Newton's arm will have to carry the offense in a similar fashion to the way it did against New Orleans or Tampa Bay(Both of the later season games, not the early season ones. The reason for this is the Broncos' stout defense will likely make the run game less effective than usual, the good news for Newton is he has faced top flight secondaries, good pass rushes and will have ample time at the line of scrimmage to survey the defense before running a play. Greg Olsen/Owen Daniels: These two tight ends very well may be the true keys to success. Although for different reasons. Greg Olsen will be targeted by the Broncos in a similar fashion to how they handled Gronkowski. He will have to pull defenders away from the middle while still making plays when given the opportunity. Basically Olsen will have to play like Gronkowski did to keep the Panthers offense moving. Owen Daniels will have to capitalize on the Panthers defense focusing on other weapons. Daniels caught 2 touchdowns against the Patriots and was the difference in the game. Surprisingly he was more or less unguarded on both of his touchdowns. The reason for this is how the Patriots schemed to remove Thomas, Sanders and Norwood out on those particular plays while leaving Daniels to roam freely and beat the Patriots easily. What to Watch: Carolina's run game VS. Denver's front seven The key to the Panthers offense, as most of you are well aware, is the run game. Carolina, as odd of a fact as it is to say based on seasons past, has one of the best offensive lines of the NFL this season. Led by guards Trai Turner and Andrew Norwell(both top 10 guards in the NFL) and Ryan Kalil in at center to create a great interior. This offensive line is phenomenal when they get into open space, they are both huge and fast which create some beautiful big man highlights. The attack itself will be led by Jonathan Stewart but expect reverses to Ginn and Brown to be mixed in and Newton to have designed runs. The Bronco's defense has given up huge gains to reverses during the playoffs and you can bet that Mike Shula understands that. This brings us to the most important part of the Panthers rushing attack. The run blocking schemes hide weaknesses(Michael Oher/Mike Remmers) by letting the guards pull often and keeping the ball in the backfield with misdirection. The squad will need to run fast, hard, and strategically in order to set the pace. While Carolinas run game houses all the tools necessary to be successful, they will need to be firing on all cylinders in order to be successful against the #1 rated Broncos defense. Look for Denver to bring a lot of pressure early in the game to try and stifle the run game. This allows the defense to revert to a style of play they are more comfortable of playing; which is a pass-rush heavy setup, allowing their skilled secondary to play man-to-man. Von Miller and Demarcus Ware will be rushing from the edge, both are top flight talents who will require either a double team or a way to scheme them out of the play. On the interior Sylvester Williams is the weak link. Unfortunately he is surrounded by Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson. The Broncos often rush five and leave Brandon Marshall and Danny Trevathan to help the stout secondary. The Panthers will likely try to attack with HB Dives and other "up the gut" runs because of how strong the interior of the line is for the Panthers and how weak the interior of the line is for the Broncos. Meanwhile the Broncos will try to bring linebackers up the middle and force the Panthers to try the edges. This match-up is important because if either side doesnt come to play on Sunday, the result will be very costly. ADVANTAGE: EVEN(No seriously. I don't think this could be more even. Carolina's secondary VS. Denver's Wide Receiver Corps Carolinas secondary has taken some bad blows this season, with both Bene Benwikere, and Charles Tillman out. But have no fear, because the magical wizard who is Dave Gettleman patched that secondary right back up immediately. With cast-offs from other teams including the at the time retired Cortland Finnegan, as well as Robert McClain, who was initially drafted by the Panthers, but went on to play for 2 other teams before returning late this season. These two have been on the team for about 2 months now while playing as good as we could hope, which is amazing considering they were plugged right into the roles of Tillman and Benwikere with little time to learn the specifics of the Panther's defense. With Josh Norman at the #1 position, and the very determined Kurt Coleman at FS and Roman Harper at SS, the secondary should be able to tame the Broncos if they play lights out for the entire game. However, as we have seen in previous games this season, the secondary has a tendency to play soft late in the game if allowed breathing room which must not happen against Peyton Manning if Carolina wants to keep the game close. The main weaknesses(Finnegan and McClain) will be pairing with Demaryius Thomas and Jordan Norwood. You heard me right. Robert McClain will be on Demaryius Thomas more than Josh Norman will. This is a mismatch, but the reason this will happen is Sanders is the bigger receiving threat and Norman will follow him the majority of the day. Expect McClain to get a lot of safety help which could leave Finnegan on an island. On the opposite side of the line is Denvers Wide Receiver Corps., headed by Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. This season Denvers offense was 10th in passing offense, and 9th in overall offense. The Broncos offense steers towards the pass-heavy side, with a passing average of 69% per game. Both Arizona and Seattle ranked better in terms of offense against the Broncos, however do not dismiss them as a threat: Peyton Manning and his offense certainly has the ability to turn the game upside down if given the chance. Look for Denver to attack the slot position manned by Finnegan, as well as pressing match ups on McClain. It is vital for the Broncos to establish an effective passing game on their side if they want to be effective against this wily and deceptive defense that Carolina has. Emmanuel Sanders has quietly had the better season in Denver. Demaryius Thomas has had the case of the drops and has been more of a lumbering wide receiver than the threat he has the potential to be. Jordan Norwood plays well out of the slot but make no mistake Thomas and Sanders both are the main weapons and are great weapons. It is essential for the Panther's secondary to keep pressure on the receiving corps so that the defensive line is allowed those crucial extra seconds to try and get to Manning. The thieves will need to come out guns blazin and keep that energy through game until the last snap, if they can do that then it will be a very tough task for Denvers offense to get things going. ADVANTAGE: Carolina's pass rush VS. Denver's offensive line In order to shut down Denvers offense, the Panthers' defensive line needs to bring the pressure, and a lot of it. Without a doubt, the crown jewel of our pass rush right now is Kawaan Short who has acquired 11 sacks just this season. KK the destroyer, along with Star Lotulelei, create havoc on the inner line and eat through average linemen like bacon on a Sunday morning. Denver must prevent the pocket from collapsing if they want Peyton Manning to stand a chance against this hungry defensive line. On both ends of the line sit recently acquired veteran Jared Allen, and Charles Johnson. These two certainly possess the skill to get to the Quarterback as well as Veteran experience, but they will need to play with every ounce of ability they have. Charles Johnson was an absolute monster in previous seasons but suffered a serious hamstring injury early this season. Here is the good news for the Panthers defensive line. Johnson has a history of taking a long time to recover from injury and produce at a high level. His play has steadily gotten better as the season progresses and he gets into his groove. The reserve unit features Dwan Edwards, Kony Ealy, Ryan Delaire and Mario Addison who are good for NASCAR packages as well as bringing the hog mollies. The strength of the Denver line also happens to be in the middle of the field with Evan Mathis and Luis Vasquez at guard. The tackles are the weaker links on the offensive line which means both Allen and Johnson will have to play their best to help Short get to Manning. While the Denver offensive line ranks in the bottom half of the league in pass protection and run blocking Evan Mathis is a top ten guard, Vasquez is not bad and the tackles are arguably better than the Panthers tackles. I will admit that I know very little about Matt Paradis so I can't say more than he is supposedly better at run blocking than pass protection. Watch for Carolina to bring pressure early in the game to keep the Broncos on their heels. As seen in previous games, the defense will switch up their strategy if things arent going as planned with the rush. Bringing unique blitzes with Kurt Coleman, Thomas Davis/Shaq Thompson, Josh Norman and even Cortland Finnegan at times. ADVANTAGE: Oh come on now. Don't get your panties in a bunch everyone. The most important matchup was not forgotten and no. It isn't the Denver pass rush vs Newton. It is. Peyton Manning vs Luke Kuechly This is the ultimate showdown. The pre snap chess match of the century. The holy grail for those who truly love the strategy on each individual play. Who will win? Well to answer that let's take a look at each side. Peyton Manning is a cunning old devil with lots of experience under his belt. He may not be what he was earlier in his career but he still has a mental edge over most human beings. Manning will need to put the Broncos in the right play to combat the Panthers defense frequently in order for the Broncos to move the ball at all. He will do this with a lot of conversation at the line of scrimmage based on the positioning of the Panthers defenders. On the other side you have Luke Kuechly. He is a nightmare to play against for the simple fact that he knows every play the opponent has run the entire season and will call out each individual play before it happens. This leads to important plays and great chess matches. Kuechly is the quarterback of his defense and make no mistake he is a top tier quarterback. (even if he doesn't throw the ball) This battle of wits between some of the most football smart players in the nation will determine the outcome of this game more than anything else will. "Who can get his team into the best position to beat the other's scheme. is the most important question of this game. That is why Manning vs. Kuechly is the matchup to watch. ADVANTAGE: PLAYER POSITION INJURY OFFICIAL STATUS MOST RECENT UPDATE(s) Thomas Davis LB Arm (FP - 2/3) After breaking his arm in the NFCCG, Davis had surgery on 1/25 to insert a plate and screws in hopes that he could play in the Super Bowl. He was a non-participant last week, but a full participant on 2/3. Update 9:00PM on 2/3, per Joe Person, Davis will have his forearm re-examined Friday, and according to Rivera, “When the doctors say hes 100% Ill go with it. ” Mike Tolbert FB Knee (FP - 2/3) After tweaking his knee and exiting the NFCCG 2 weeks ago, Tolbert had his knee inspected and then sat out practice in Charlotte. Update at 9:00PM on 2/3, per Max Henson, Tolbert was listed as a full participant in practice. A pool reporter is the only media allowed at practice and did not note any particulars on Tolbert, nor did Rivera discuss any. Jared Allen DE Foot LP – 2/3 After fully participating in practice all last week, and completely avoiding the injury report, Allen was limited in practice on 2/3. All three of the albums in the rate are amazing in their own way and while being sonically similar, they are kinda different lyrical wise. Let's jump into the artist and album informations, which I totally didnt steal from Wikipedia articles, and the tracklists! IMPORTANT NOTE: Me and luna decided to reduce the song count in the main rate to 40 and move the 17 deluxe edition/b-side songs to a bonus rate. For the people who read this before and want to send their ballots: Florence + the Machine is a indie-rock/indie-pop group that consists of two main members, Florence Leontine Mary Welch, the vocalist of the group, and Isabella Summers who produces and co-writes some of the bands greatest songs. According to Welch, the band had started off as a private joke that got out of hand. She explained the name in an interview: “I made music with my friend, who we called Isabella Machine, to which I was Florence Robot. When I was about an hour away from my first gig, I still didn't have a name, so I thought 'Okay, I'll be Florence Robot/Isa Machine' before realizing that name was so long it'd drive me mad. Florence + the Machine's debut album, Lungs, which we are going to rate, was released in 2009; on 17 January 2010, the album reached the top position in the UK after being on the chart for 28 consecutive weeks. Lungs won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 2010. Florence has been compared to other female singers such as Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, PJ Harvey, Shirley Manson, Alison Goldfrapp, Tori Amos and Björk. Welch has a wide contralto voice range. When describing her debut album, Lungs, Welch said, When I was writing these songs, I used to refer to myself as Florence Robot. Because I really like what a machine thinks organic instruments really sound like. Prior to recording Lungs, Florence Welch had considered or attempted several different projects in the music industry, including an interest in becoming a country singer, recording folk songs she had written, and collaborating with Razorlight's guitarist Johnny Borrell, but ultimately she was unsatisfied with those endeavors. It was not until Welch began writing and recording with childhood friend Isabella Summers at her small independent workplace, Antenna Studios, in London that Welch crafted a sound she wanted to develop further. Prior to being signed by Island Records in November 2008, Welch recalled conversing with several session guitarists and drummers to help arrange her preferred style, which she explained was "a wave of sound that would envelop, something that was soaring, slightly church-like and then-doom-like. The band elected to record a shorter rendition of "Kiss with a Fist" as their debut single. Welch, however, began expanding upon the crude punk style which influenced "Kiss with a Fist" by listening to more contemporary music, particularly Arcade Fire's first album Funeral. The influence of the recordings would manifest itself on the concept she had devised for Lungs, which, according to Welch, was a "scrapbook of the past five years. it's about guilt, fear, love, death, violence, nightmares, and] dreams. Ultimately, the majority of Welch's earlier self-penned compositions were rejected for the album, except "Kiss with a Fist" and "Between Two Lungs" because they did not mesh well with the album's themes. Fortunately for the group rehearsed and improvised some of the material in the relaxed setting of Summers' studio, allowing Welch to refine the tribal drumming back-dropping Lungs' tracks, most notably "Dog Days Are Over. Lungs was recorded in the United Kingdom with five different producers— Paul Epworth(produced Adeles Rolling In The Deep and many more great songs) James Ford, Stephen Mackey, Eg White and Charlie Hugall. Most of the songs on the album were mixed by Cenzo Townshend. A fun trivia: In 2007, Welch recorded with a band named Ashok, who released an album titled Plans on the Filthy Lucre/About Records label. This album included the earliest version of her later hit "Kiss with a Fist" which at this point was titled "Happy Slap. HOSTS THOUGHTS: Lungs is an explosion of emotions. It is my favorite album of all time just because of that, Florence Welch conveys her emotions in such a way that you can't help but be allured and just listen to her with your mouth wide open in awe. At least that was my first reaction, I probably listened to one song from this album ten times (I won't mention that song before it gets eliminated in the rate, I am superstitious like that) before I could jump onto the other tracks and listen to this album in full. I hope you will love this album as much as I do. Fun fact: I still haven't listened to Ceremonials or How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, so Lungs is basically my only real exposure to Florence + The Machine so far! Yeah, I need to get on that. Still, though, Lungs is such a magical, gorgeous album- every song feels so rich in texture, I love the very orchestral and harp-heavy instrumentation, and Florence Welch has such a powerful, majestic voice. This album is such a gem, and I hope those of y'all doing this rate who haven't heard this before enjoy it as much as I do! Marina Lambrini Diamandis, known professionally as Marina and the Diamonds, is a Welsh singer-songwriter. Diamandis has described herself as an "indie artist with pop goals" and often analyses components of human behavior in her music. Obsessed with becoming a singer, almost as if it was a disease" she worked at a petrol station for two months in order to earn money to move to London. Despite not having a musical background, Diamandis was able to create lyrics due to her childhood love of writing. She first began writing music when she was 18 years old; she moved to London to attend dance school, but quit two months later. She studied music at the University of East London and transferred to a classic composition course in Middlesex University the following year, but after two months she dropped out. Knowing that the Spice Girls were formed by an advertisement in The Stage, Diamandis applied for auditions listed in that newspaper. She traveled for several unsuccessful auditions, including opportunities with the musical for The Lion King and a boy band organized by Virgin Records, during which she managed to leave her CV to an A&R Representative, but was unable to audition at the time of the appointment as she felt sick. In 2005, she created the stage name "Marina and the Diamonds" after coming to prominence, the Diamonds" was established as a reference to her fans, instead of her backing band. Inspired by the example of Daniel Johnston, Diamandis decided to compose her own music and stop going to auditions; she taught herself how to play the piano and recorded music on a keyboard. She self-composed and produced her earlier demos with GarageBand, and independently released her debut extended play Mermaid vs. Sailor through Myspace in 2007. She held discussions with fourteen music labels, rejecting all but one as she believed it was the only one which would not dictate her image. She came to the attention of Neon Gold Records' Derek Davies in 2008, which managed her for six months, and was hired as the supporting act for Australian recording artist Gotye. In October, Diamandis finalized a recording contract with 679 Recordings (eventually renamed 679 Artists) a subdivision of Warner Music Group. So why did I copy-paste all this info about Marina here? It is because her debut album, The Family Jewels has some songs where Marina sings about the problems she had while trying to be a singer. It was released on 15 February 2010 and includes collaborations with several producers including Pascal Gabriel, Liam Howe, Greg Kurstin, Richard "Biff" Stannard, and Starsmith. (Notice that five years passed since she chose her stage name and nearly three years passed since her MySpace album. She was also 24 years old when the album was released, which is not really a young age for a pop-indie act to release their debut album) Marina explained that the album is "a body of work largely inspired by the seduction of commercialism, modern social values, family and female sexuality" intended to be "enjoyed and consumed as a story and theory that encourages people to question themselves. Diamandis claimed that she made producer Liam Howe take 486 vocal takes for "The Outsider. Hollywood" takes inspiration from Diamandis' previous obsession with American celebrity culture, while in "I Am Not a Robot" her favourite track from the album, she sings to tell herself to accept imperfection, with lines such as "you've been acting awful tough lately, smoking a lot of cigarettes lately. don't be so pathetic" she expected audiences to be able to relate to the song. "Numb" reflects on the dedication and sacrifice needed during her early years in London; Oh No. and "Are You Satisfied. have similar lyrical themes. The album had initially been scheduled for release in October 2009, and was delayed by Diamandis' self-confessed perfectionism. HOSTS THOUGHTS: The Family Jewels hits close to home. Marina hits you with your own thoughts so much that you start to think, is this woman reading my mind? She sings about the bad effects of self-awareness, anxiety, bi-polar disorder. This made the album look really moody I know but the songs are actually mostly upbeat! And it's my problem if I have no friends and feel I want to die. she sings in Are You Satisfied? you can feel her voice shaking as she says those words while the upbeat instrumentals play in the back. I could quote much more lyrics from this absolute jewel of an album, but we want you to listen to it and experience it yourself. This album, oh my god. This album is that bitch for me. The Family Jewels is a top 5 album of all-time for me- probably always will be- and I simply can't overstate the sheer impact this album has had on me as a music consumer. Discovering Oh No! via the autoplay of a Dangan Ronpa roleplay blog on tumblr in the summer of 2013 basically changed my life, and there was a period in late '13-early '14 that I would listen to either this or Electra Heart every Friday when I got home. I love everything about this album, from Marina's quirky vocal inflections to the crisp production (that still sounds great going-on 8 years later. and the sharp, relatable, classically tumblrcore in the best possible way lyrics. When she was 12, her father bought her a guitar and after a few years of lessons, she was on stage, performing with her guitar tutors. Kimbras debut album, Vows was recorded between 2008 and 2011 and was released on 29 August 2011 in New Zealand, and on 2 September in Australia by Warner Bros. Records. Vows has spawned 3 charting singles, Settle Down. Cameo Lover" and "Good Intent. Vows charted at #3 on the RIANZ Albums Chart in its first week after release, with "Settle Down" re-entering the singles chart at #37. In Australia, the album debuted at #5 on the ARIA Albums Chart, later peaking at #4. Vows has been certified Platinum in Australia for shipment of 70, 000 units and Platinum in New Zealand for sales of 15, 000 units. On 4 May 2012, the album was re-released with six new songs, new mixing and was mastered by Colin Leonard in Atlanta, US. It was released in Australia as Vows: Australian Tour Edition to coincide with her winter 2012 tour and included 6 previously unreleased songs. This edition of the album was released in New Zealand on 11 May 2012 as Vows: Deluxe Edition, which includes every song from this era and is the edition we are going to rate. HOSTS THOUGHTS: Probably the most up-tempo album of the three, Vows is also rich in emotions but with a quirky twist. Some lyrics on the album are so heart-felt, so pure that you would hug them if you could. This may sound funny, but once you listen you'll see why. Kimbra also has a great unique voice that may sound happy/cheerful at first, but as it can be heard on the end of Cameo Lover and almost all of The Build-Up and Plain Gold Ring's live version, it can be quite somber too. If you like this album, be sure to check out her new singles and her second album Golden Echo! Her third album, Primal Heart will be released in April too! hopefully Vows is an interesting album for me! The first time I heard Settle Down, let me tell you, I was shook. I'd known of Kimbra mostly, like everyone else, from her feature on Somebody That I Used To Know (which is wonderful, FTR) but this was my first time hearing a solo joint from her, and I was absolutely mesmerised. It might legitimately be one of my favourite songs ever, NGL, so it's only fitting that it's the song that kicks off this album! As for the rest of Vows, it has a lot of highlights, with Kimbra having such a bewitching presence even on record and old-school-inspired instrumentals that don't feel derivative. It's a lovely debut record! Also, if you have time, look at some of Kimbra's live performances on YouTube- she's fantastic, and it's where she shines IMO. The Niners are fresh off a drubbing of the Packers, and while their offense isnt what wins them games necessarily, it was more than functional last week in the blowout win. Jimmy Garoppolo (downgrade) is functioning as more of a game manager when the Niners have a lead, but has shown he can step up for some impressive throws when needed, which may be the case this weekend. Unfortunately, Baltimore has the 3rd ranked pass DVOA, and cedes the 4th fewest FPPG to QBs. This is likely a week to avoid Jimmy G as a streaming option, as the Ravens secondary has been borderline elite the past few weeks in particular, and Garoppolo has only produced start-worthy lines in three or four of his games. Hes a mid-range QB2, albeit one that may be forced into more volume than usual if the Ravens can take a first half lead. As previously mentioned, the Ravens secondary has been a force since adding Marcus Peters and getting Jimmy Smith back from injury. Deebo Samuel (downgrade) and Emmanuel Sanders (downgrade) are both back close to full health, but will face imposing matchups out the outside. Samuel has been on a tear the past three weeks, and should still be viewed as a WR3, but both his floor and ceiling are lower this week. Sanders has struggled since his initial blowup game after being traded to the Niners, and is a risky low-end WR3, albeit one that has potential for a few big plays every time out. George Kittle (auto-start) went off last week in his return from injury, and although he may not be 100% the rest of the season, he continues to make for an elite TE1 play. Dante Pettis (drop) is out this week, and has struggled to make an impact all year, so owners that were hanging on can move on comfortably. RB Breakdown The Niners backfield has been a tough read all year, and Matt Breida may return this week after getting in limited practices this week. He would be a risky play considering the potential for re-injury, but his presence does further complicate the outlook of Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert (downgrade. Despite a low ranked run DVOA, the Ravens have only given up the 7th fewest FPPG to RBs. Coleman is still in play as a low-end RB2 based on his TD potential, but Mostert likely becomes unusable if Breida suits up. Breida is no more than a desperation flex, and Mostert is RB4 in PPR leagues. His floor is high, his ceiling is astronomical, and even against one of the best defenses in the league, he needs to be in all lineups. The Ravens passing game has been low-volume all year long, and only Mark Andrews has been a consistent option this year. That being said, this week probably isnt the time to chase points, as the Colts have been very good against the pass, plus they play at one of the slowest paces in the NFL (Rotoworld. IND is also very good against explosive pass plays (20+ yards) giving up chunk plays through the air on just 8% of plays this season (sharpfootballstats. My personal opinion is that I dont want my fantasy season riding on Tannehill, and thats where we are, as most leagues start playoffs in Week 14. Looking forward, however, TEN plays OAK, HOU, and NO. The first two are great matchups for QBs, OAK is ranked 30th in Pass DVOA, and HOU is 26th - Tannehill could be a solid stream for those matchups. Again, Im personally not buying in (possibly because Im a stubborn Oregon/Mariota fan) but hes shown enough the last five weeks to make it a calculated risk that could pay huge dividends. Brown (downgrade) roasted JAX last week to the tune of a 4-135-1 receiving line, but half of those yards came on a 65-yard catch and run touchdown, and Brown only saw 5 targets in the game. Essentially, it comes down to volume, and while Brown may have the occasional blowup game like we saw last week, he cant be trusted as more than a WR3/4 on the run-first Titans. Tennessee presents an interesting matchup - 23rd ranked pass DVOA and 15th fewest FPPG to QBs. Now that the Colts have their pass catchers mostly healthy, Brissetts floor is re-established in the QB2 range moving forward, and this game should provide him a chance to achieve that and potentially more. But he cant be viewed as more than a QB2 due to his inconsistent play, and the fact that the Colts are still a run-heavy team even with the injuries. There are better options in 1 QB leagues. After playing last week on limited snaps, T. Hilton (OUT) suffered a late-week setback and will not play this Sunday. With Hilton out, Zach Pascal (volume upgrade) might see an uptick in targets, but is a risky WR3 play considering he had only one productive game during Hiltons 2+ game absence. Hes more of a WR4, and the Titans are neither a matchup upgrade or downgrade as they sit middle of the pack in defending the pass. Eric Ebron has been placed on IR, so Jack Doyle makes for an intriguing rest of season play, but cant be trusted as more than a low-end TE1 until we see him produce. No other Colts pass catcher should be on fantasy radars at this time. Miami has been incredibly giving to QBs - giving up the 4th most FPPG to the position - and the Eagles high projected point total is a great sign. The injury problems remain though, and owners will want to track the status of his dinged up receivers throughout the week. If injury reports come up bleak, consider placing him in the high-end QB2 range, as the Eagles might opt to focus on pounding the run if they dont have the personnel to win in the passing game. But assuming he has at least one or two of his top weapons this week, Wentz can be plugged in as mid-range QB1 based on the matchup. The Eagles are currently expected to get Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor back from injury this week. They would return to an excellent matchup, but the Eagles passing game hasnt been very explosive after losing their deep threat in DeSean Jackson early in the season. Still, Jeffery can be viewed as a low-end WR2 with the Dolphins giving up the 9th most FPPG to WRs. Agholor is only a WR4 due to his lack of targets when the Eagles have other passing options available. Zach Ertz is questionable to play, but would be an obvious TE1 if he suits up. RB Breakdown It was not overly surprising to see the Eagles sign Jay Ajayi and plug him in last week, as Jordan Howard has missed the past two games and may sit again this week. They have given up the 12th fewest FPPG to QBs overall, but in the past few weeks theyve ceded the 2nd fewest FPPG to the position. Fitzpatricks willingness to chuck it around the field make him an always interesting steamer in deeper 2 QB leagues, but this isnt the week to start him for team on the precipice of the fantasy playoffs. Hes simply too inconsistent in terms of total production and has a 50-50 success rate of quality fantasy lines the past 6 games. Hes not a streaming option in 1 QB leagues unless you are desperate, and the narrative of the Eagles exploitable secondary has suddenly vanished over the second half of the season. The only Dolphins receiver worth considering at this point is Devante Parker (volume upgrade) as he has shown a solid connection with Fitzmagic the past few weeks. The Eagles are no longer an exploitable matchup, but Parker can still be viewed as a WR3 due to his bankable volume, and the likelihood that the Dolphins will need to pass to have a chance to win this week. RB Breakdown When OAK faces negative game-script, Josh Jacobs is completely phased out. Its likely to occur again this week, so owners beware. Richard Jewell Watch streams. 64th Macau Formula Three Grand Prix 64th Suncity Group Macau Grand Prix - FIA F3 World Cup Welcome everyone to the 64th running of the Macau Grand Prix This year marks the 35th time the event has been run under the Formula Three regulations. The event has previously run under Formula Pacific, Formula Libre, and even sports-car regulations in the past, before switching over to Formula Three back in 1983. The winner of the Main Race will be officially recognised as the winner of the 2017 FIA Formula 3 World Cup. This is also the first time since 2012 that the event has had no previous winners on the grid, meaning that every driver will be looking to make their mark on what is arguably the worlds toughest circuit for rising stars. Listen to our podcast previewing the event here: Link About One of the crown jewels of the motorsport world, the Macau Grand Prix is one of the most exciting, exhausting, and downright dangerous races in all of racing. When compared to other circuits, both Monaco and Pau come to mind, but neither really come close to how fast and tight some of the corners are taken. As it is a race on public roads, the Guia Street Circuit contains some interesting corners, including the famous crash prone Lisboa Bend and the 7-metre wide Melco Hairpin. Because of the circuits location and prestige, there have always been a mix of the best talent across the world taking part each year, including those from the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Many current and former Formula One drivers have participated in the event early in their careers. Famous winners include F1 champions Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, F1 winners David Coulthard, Richard Patrese and Ralf Schumacher, as well as 2017 Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato, and Current Formula E champion Lucas Di Grassi. When not counting the former categories, only three drivers have taken victory at the circuit in F3 machinery more than once, with Edoardo Mortara (2009-2010) Felix Rosenqvist (2014-2015) and António Félix da Costa (2012, 2016) winning the race twice. Since neither of those three, or other previous winners will be taking part in 2017, all eyes will be on who will be the next one to finish on top. Weekend Format Over the course of the week (alongside the other categories taking part) there will be two Practice Sessions, two Qualifying Sessions, the Qualification Race, and finally the Main Race. The grid for the Qualification Race is decided by the drivers best time set over the two previous Qualifying Sessions. The Qualification Race is run over 10 laps on Saturday, and the finishing positions of the drivers decides the grid for the Main Race. However, the only current FIA F3 chassis is the Dallara F317, an upgraded Dallara F312 for the 2017 season. Any homologated FIA F3 engine from 2012 onwards is allowed to be entered. Because of this, Macau often sees the highest amount of differing engine suppliers for any Formula Three event, though this will be down on previous years due to a drop in driver numbers. This years engine manufacturers include: Volkswagen (13 Entries) 3 Mercedes (6 Entries) 9 Toyota (2 Entries) 1 Tomei (1 Entry) 0 Other homologated engines include those by Renault Sport, Mugen Honda, and Toda Racing. Neither Renault nor Honda have taken part in the Macau Grand Prix since the 2012 regulations came into effect, while Toda have opted to not participate in 2017. New for 2017 Maximum number of cars allowed to participate down from 30 to 28. Minimum weight requirement for the car increased from 565kg to 580kg. Full-course-yellow (virtual safety car) will be used if a safety car is not needed. Both races will have imposed maximum time limits of 60 minutes, even if suspended. The qualifying race will run for a maximum of 60 minutes, regardless of any red-flag periods. The Main Race can be extended at the Race Director's discretion. Full regulations can be found here: Entry List/Eligibility In the past, entry into the Macau Grand Prix required drivers to have taken part in accredited Formula Three event during the racing year. Since 2016, this rule has been scrapped in favour of a preference system. First preference for drives will be given to those who performed exceptionally in the FIA F3 European Championship and then to other Formula Three events. Afterwards, driver eligibility will be given on a case by case basis and the FIA can choose to accept or decline any entry at their discretion. While previous years have seen an average of 30 or so drivers, only 22 will be taking part this year due to the absence of Mücke Motorsport, HitechGP, Double R Racing, Fortec Motorsport, and Toda Racing. By John Lord, LL. D. I think the historians belittle Columbus when they would excite our pity for his misfortunes. They insult the dignity of all struggling souls, and make utilitarians of all benefactors, and give false views of success. Few benefactors, on the whole, were ever more richly re- warded than he. He died Admiral of the Seas, a grandee of Spain, ——having bishops for his eulogists and princes for his mourners, ——the founder of an illustrious house, whose name and memory gave glory even to the Span- ish throne. And even if he had not been rewarded with material gains, it was enough to feel that he had conferred a benefit on the world which could scarcely be appreciated in his lifetime, ——a benefit so transcend- ent that its results could be seen only by future genera- tions. Who could adequately pay him for his services; who could estimate the value of his gift? What though they load him today with honors, or cast him tomorrow into chains? ——that is the fate of all immor- tal benefactors since our world began. His great soul should have soared beyond vulgar rewards. In the loftiness of his self-consciousness he should have ac- cepted, without a murmur, whatever fortune awaited him. Had he merely given to civilization a new style of buttons, or an improved envelope, or a punch for a railway conductor, or a spring for a carriage, or a mining tool, or a screw, or revolver, or reaper, the inventors of which have "seen millions in them. and been cheated out of his gains, he might have whimpered over his wrongs. How few benefactors have received even as much as he; for he won dignities, admiration, and un- dying fame. We scarcely know the names of many who have made grand bequests. Who invented the mariner's compass? Who gave the lyre to primeval ages, or the blacksmith's forge, or the letters of the alphabet, or the arch in architecture, or glass for win- dows? Who solved the first problem of geometry? Who first sang the odes which Homer incorporated with the Iliad? Who first turned up the earth with a plough? Who first used the weaver's shuttle? Who devised the cathedrals of the Middle Ages? Who gave the keel to ships? who was the first that raised bread by yeast? Who invented chimneys? But all ages will know that Columbus discovered America; and his monuments are in every land, and his greatness is painted by the ablest historians. But I will not enlarge on the rewards Columbus received, or the ingratitude which succeeded them, by force of envy or from the disappointment of worldly men in not realizing all the gold that he promised. Let me allude to the results of his discovery. The first we notice was the marvellous stimulus to maritime adventures. Europe was inflamed with a desire to extend geographical knowledge, or add new countries to the realms of European sovereigns. Within four years of the discovery of the West India Islands by Columbus, Cabot had sailed past Newfound- land, and Vasco da Gama had doubled the Cape of Good Hope, and laid the foundation of the Portuguese em- pire in the East Indies. In 1499 Ojeda, one of the companions of Columbus, and Amerigo Vespucci dis- covered Brazil. In 1500 Cortereal, a Portuguese, explored the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1505 Fracesco de Almeira established factories along the coast of Malabar. In 1510 the Spaniards formed settlements on the mainland at Panama. In 1511 the Portuguese established themselves at Malacca. In 1513 Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Darien an reached the Pacific Ocean. The year after that, Ponce de Leon had visited Florida. In 1515 the Rio de la Plata was navigated; and in 1517 the Portuguese had begun to trade with China and Bengal. As early as 1520 Cortes had taken Mexico, and completed the conquest of that rich coun- try the following year. In 1522 Cano circumnavigated the globe. In 1524 Pizarro discovered Peru, which in less than twelve years was completely subjugated—— the year when California was discovered by Cortes. In 1542 the Portuguese were admitted to trade with Japan. In 1576 Frobisher sought a North-western passage to India; and the following year Sir Francis Drake commenced his more famous voyages under the auspices of Elizabeth. In 1578 Sir Humphrey Gilbert colonized Virginia, followed rapidly by other English settlements, until before the century closed the whole continent was colonized either by Spanards, or Portu- guese, or English, or French, or Dutch. All countries came in to share the prizes held out by the discovery of the New World. Colonization followed the voyages of discovery. It was animated by the hope of finding gold and precious stones. It was carried under great discouragements and hardships and unforeseen difficulties. As a general thing, the colonists were not accustomed to manual labor; they were adventurers and broken-down de- pendents on great families, who found restraint irk- some and the drudgeries of their new life almost unendurable. Nor did they intend, at the outset, permanent settlements; they expected to accumulate gold and silver, and then return to their country. They had sought to improve their condition, and their condition became forlorn. They were exposed to sick- ness from malaria, poor food, and hardship; they were molested by the natives whom they constantly pro- voked; they were subject to cruel treatment on the part of royal governors. They melted away wherever they settled, by famine, disease, and war, whether in South or North America. They were discontented and disap- pointed, and not easily governed; the chieftains quar- relled with each other, and were disgraced by rapacity and cruelty. They did not find what they expected. They were lonely and desolate, and longed to return to the homes they had left, but were frequently without means of return, ——doomed to remain where they were, and die. Colonization had no dignity until men went to the New World for religious liberty, or to work upon the soil. The conquest of Mexico and Peru, how- ever, opened up the mining of gold and silver, which were finally found in great abundance. And when the richness of these countries in the precious metals was finally established, then a regular stream of emigrants flocked to the American shores. Gold was at last found, but not until thousands had miserably perished. The mines of Mexico and Peru undoubtedly enriched Spain, and filled Europe with envy and emulation. A stream of gold flowed to the mother country, and the caravels which transported the treasures of the new world became objects of plunder to all nations hostile to Spain. The seas were full of pirates. Sir Francis Drake was an undoubted pirate, and returned, after his long voyage around the world, with immense treasure, which he had stolen. Then followed, with the eager search after gold and silver, a rapid demoralization in all maritime countries. It would be interesting to show how the sudden accumulation of wealth by Spain led to luxury, arro- gance, and idleness, followed by degeneracy and de- cay, since those virtues on which the strength of man is based are weakened by sudden wealth. In- dustry declined in proportion as Spain became enriched by the precious metals. But this inquiry is foreign to my object. A still more interesting inquiry arises, how far the nations of Europe were really enriched by the rapid accumulation of gold and silver. The search for the precious metals may have stimulated commercial en- terprise, but it is not so clear that it added to the substantial wealth of Europe, except so far as it promoted industry. Gold is not wealth; it is simply the exponent of wealth. Real wealth is in farms and shops and ships, ——in the various channels of industry, in the result of human labor. So far as the precious metals enter into useful manufactures, or into articles of beauty and taste, they are indeed inherently valu- able. Mirrors, plate, jewelry, watches, gilded furniture, the adornments of the person, in an important sense, constitute wealth, since all nations value them, and will pay for them as they do for corn or oil. So far as they are connected with art, they are valuable in the same sense as statues and pictures, on which labor has been expended. There is something useful, and even necessary, besides food and raiment and houses. The gold which ornamented Solomon's temple, or the Mi- nerva of Phidias, or the garments of Leo X., had a value. The ring which is a present to brides is a part of a marriage ceremony. The golden watch, which never tarnishes, is more valuable inherently than a pewter one, because it remains beautiful. Thus when gold enters into ornaments deemed indispensible, or into manufactures which are needed, it has the inhe- rent value, ——it is wealth. But when gold is a mere medium of exchange, ——its chief use, ——then it has only a conventional value; I mean, it does not make the nation rich or poor, since the rarer it is the more it will purchase of the necessaries of life. A pound's weight of gold, in ancient Greece, or in Mediæval Europe, would purchase as much wheat as twenty pounds' weight will purchase to-day. If the mines of Mexico or Peru or California had never been worked, the gold in the civilized world three hundred years ago would have been as valuable for banking pur- poses, or as an exchange for agricultural products, as twenty times its present quantity, since it would have bought as much as twenty times the quantity will buy to-day. Make diamonds as plenty as crystals, they would be worth no more than crystals, if they were not harder and more beautiful. Make gold as plenty as silver, it would be worth no more than silver, except for manufacturing purposes; it would be worth no more to bankers and merchants. The vast increase in the production of the precious metals simply in- creased the value of the commodities for which they were exchanged. A laborer can purchase no more bread with a dollar to-day than he could with five cents three hundred years ago. Five cents were really as much wealth three hundred years ago as a dollar is to-day. Wherein, then, has the increase in the precious metals added to the wealth of the world, if a twentieth part of the gold and silver now in circulaton would buy as much land, or furniture, or wheat, or oil three hundred years ago as the whole amount now used as money will buy to-day? Had no gold or silver mines been discovered in America, the gold and silver would have appreciated in value in proportion to the wear of them. In other words, the scarcer the gold and silver the more the same will purchase of the fruits of human industry. So industry is the wealth, not he gold. It is the cultivated farms and the manufactures and the buildings and the internal improvements of a country which constitute its real wealth, since those represent its industry, ——the labor of men. Mines, indeed, em- ploy the labor of men, but they do not furnish food for the body, or raiment to wear, or houses to live in, or fuel for cooking, or any purpose whatever of human comfort or necessity, ——only a material for ornament; which I grant is wealth, so far as ornament is for the welfare of man. The marbles of ancient Greece were very valuable for the labor expended on them, either for architecture or for ornament. Gold and silver were easily selected as useful and convenient articles for exchange, like bank-notes, and so far have inherent value as they supply that necessity; but if not a fourth part of the gold and silver in exist- ence would supply that necessity; the remaining three- fourths are as inherently valueless as the paper on which bank-notes are printed. Their value consists in what they represent of the labors and industries of men. Now Spain ultimately became poor, in spite of the influx of gold and silver from the American mines, because industries of all kinds declined. People were diverted from useful callings by the mighty delusion which gold discoveries created. These discoveries had the same effect on industry, which is the wealth of nations, as the support of standing armies has in our day. They diverted men from legitimate callings. The miners had to be supported like soldiers; and worse, the sudden influx of gold and silver intoxicated men and stimulated speculation. An army of speculators do not enrich a nation, since they robe each other. They cause money to change hands; they do not stimu- late industry. They do not create wealth; they simply make it flow from one person to another. But speculations sometimes create activity in en- terprise; they inflame desires for wealth, and cause people to make greater exertions. In that sense the discovery of American mines gave a stimulus to com- merce and travel and energy. People rushed to Amer- ica for gold: these people had to be fed and clothed. Then farmers and manufacturers followed the gold- hunters; they tilled the soil to feed the miners. The new farms which dotted the region of the gold-diggers added to the wealth of the country in which the mines were located. Colonization followed gold-digging. But it was America that became enriched, not the old countries from which the miners came, except so far as the old countries furnished tools and ships and fabrics, for doubtless commerce and manufacturing were stimulated. So far, the wealth of the world increased; but the men who returned to riot in luxury and idle- ness did not stimulate enterprise. They made others idle also. The necessity of labor was lost sight of. And yet if one country became idle, another country may become industrious. There can be but little question that the discovery of the American mines gave commerce and manufactures and agriculture, on the whole, a stimulus. This was particularly seen in England. England grew rich from industry and enter- prise, as Spain became poor from idleness and luxury. The silver and gold, diffused throughout Europe, ulti- mately found their way into the pockets of English- men, who made a market for their manufactures. It was not alone the precious metals which enriched England, but the will and power to produce those articles of industry for which the rest of the world parted with their gold and silver. What has made France rich since the Revolution? Those innumer- able articles of taste and elegance——fabrics and wines——for which all Europe parted with their specie; not war, not conquest, not mines. Why till recently was Germany so poor? Because it had so little to sell to other nations; because industry was cramped by standing armies and despotic governments. One thing is certain, that the discovery of America opened a new field for industry and enterprise to all the discontented and impoverished and oppressed Euro- peans who emigrated. At first they emigrated to dig silver and gold. The opening of mines required labor, and miners were obliged to part with their gold for the necessaries of life. Thus California in our day has become peopled with farmers and merchants and manu- facturers, as well as miners. Many came to America expecting to find gold, and were disappointed, and were obliged to turn agriculturalists, as in Virginia. Many came to New England from political and religious mo- tives. But all came to better their fortunes. Gradu- ally the United States and Canada became populated from east to west and from north to south. The sur- plus population of Europe poured itself into the wilds of America. Generally the emigrants were farmers. With the growth of agricultural industry were devel- oped commerce and manufactures. Thus, materially, the world was immensely benefited. A new continent was opened for industry. No matter what the form of government may be, ——I might almost say no matter what the morals and religion of the people may be, —— so long as there is land to occupy, and to be sold cheap, the continent will fill up, and will be as densely popu- lated as Europe or Asia, because the natural advantages are good. The rivers and the lakes will be navigated; the products of the country will be exchanged for European and Asiatic products; wealth will certainly increase, and increase indefinitely. There is no calcu- lating the future resources and wealth of the New World, especially in the United States. There are no conceivable bounds to their future commerce, manu- factures, and agricultural products. We can predict with certainty the rise of new cities, villas, palaces, material splendor, limited only to the increasing re- sources and population of the country. Who can tell the number of miles of new railroad yet to be made; the new inventions to abridge human labor; what great empires are destined to rise; what un- known forms of luxury will be found out; what new and magnificent trophies of art and science will gradually be seen; what mechanism, what material glories, are sure to come? This is not speculation. Nothing can retard the growth of America in material wealth and glory. The splendid external will call forth more panegyrics than the old Roman world which fancied itself eternal. The tower of the new Babel will rise to the clouds, and be seen in all its glory through- out the earth and sea. No Fourth of July orator ever exaggerated the future destinies of America in a ma- terial point of view. No "spread-eagle" politician even conceived what will be sure to come. And what then? Grant the most indefinite expan- sion, ——the growth of empires whose splendor and wealth and power shall utterly eclipse the glories of the Old World. All this is probable. But when we have dwelt on the future material expansion; when we have given wings to imagination, and feel that even imagination cannot reach the probable realities in a material aspect, ——then our predictions and calculations stop. Beyond material glories we cannot count with certainty. The world has witnessed may powerful empires which have passed away, and left "not a rack behind. What remains of the antediluvian world? ——not even a spike of Noah's ark, larger and stronger than any modern ship. What remains of Nineveh, of Babylon, of Thebes, of Tyre, of Carthage, ——those great centres of wealth and power? What remains of Roman greatness even, except in laws and literature and renovated statues? Remember there is an undeviating uniformity in the past history of na- tions. What is the simple story of all the ages? —— industry, wealth, corruption, decay, and ruin. What conservative power has been strong enough to arrest the ruin of the nations of antiquity? Have not mate- rial forces and glories been developed and exhibited, whatever the religion and morals of the fallen nations? Cannot a country grow materially to a certain point, under the most adverse influences, in a religious and moral point of view? Yet for lack of religion and morals the nations perished, and their Babel-towers were buried in the dust. They perished for lack of true conservative forces; at least that is the judgment of historians. Nobody doubts the splendor of the material glories of the ancient nations. The ruins of Baalbec, of Palmyra, of Athens, prove this, to say nothing of history. The material glories of the an- cient nation may be surpassed by our modern won- ders; but yet all the material glories of the ancient nations passed away. Now if this is to be the destiny of America, ——an un- bounded material growth, followed by corruption and ruin, ——then Columbus has simply extended the realm for men to try material experiments. Make New York a second Carthage, and Boston a second Athens, and Philadelphia a second Antioch, and Washington a sec- ond Rome, and we simply repeat the old experiments. Did not the Romans have nearly all we have, mate- rially, except our modern scientific inventions? But has America no higher destiny than to repeat the old experiments, and improve upon them, and be come rich and powerful? Has she no higher and nobler mission? Can she lay hold of forces that the Old World never had, such as will prevent the uniform doom of nations? I maintain that there is no reason that can be urged, based on history and experience, why she should escape the fate of the nations of antiquity, unless new forces arise on this continent different from what the world has known, and which have a conseva- tive influence. If America has a great mission to de- clare and to fulfil, she must put forth altogether new forces, and these not material. And these alone will save her and save the world. It is mournful to con- template even the future magnificent material glories of America if these are not to be preserved, if these are to share the fate of ancient wonders. It is obvious that the real glory of America is to be something en- tirely different from that of which the ancients boasted. And this is to be moral and spiritual, ——that which the ancients lacked. This leads me to speak of the moral consequences of the discovery of America, ——infinitely grander than any material wonders, of which the world has been full, of which every form of paganism has boasted, which nearly everywhere has perished, and which must necessarily perish everywhere, without new forces to preserve them. In a moral point of view scarcely anything good im- mediately resulted, at least to Europe, by the discovery of America. It excited the wildest spirit of adven- ture, the most unscrupulous cupidity, the most de- moralizing speculation. It created jealousies and wars. The cruelties and injustices inflicted on the Indians were revolting. Nothing in the annals of the world exceeds the wickedness of the Spaniards in the con- quest of Peru and Mexico. That conquest is the most dismal and least glorious in human history. We see in it no poetry, or heroism, or necessity; we read of nothing but its crimes. The Jesuits, in their mission- ary zeal, partly redeemed the cruelties; but they soon imposed a despotic yoke, and confirmed their sway. Monopolies scandalously increased, and the New World was now regarded as spoil. The tone of moral feeling was lowered everywhere, for the nations were crazed with the hope of sudden accumulations. Spain be- came enervated and demoralized. On America itself the demoralization was even more marked. There never was such a state of moral degra- dation in any Christian country as in South America. Three centuries have passed, and the low state of morals continues. Contrast Mexico and Peru with the United States, morally and intellectually. What seeds of vice did not the Spaniards plant! How the old natives melted away! And then, to add to the moral evils attending colo- nization, was the sudden introduction of African slaves, es- pecially in the West Indies and Southern States of North America. Christendom seems to have lost the sense of morality. Slavery more than counterbal- ances all other advantages together. It was the stain of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Not merely slaves, but the slave-trade, increased the horrors of the frightful picture. America became associated, in the minds of Europeans, with gold-hunting, slavery, and cruelty to Indians. Better that the country had remained undiscovered than that such vices and miser- ies should be introduced into the most fertile parts of the New World. I cannot see that civilization gained anything, morally, by the discovery of America, until the new settlers were animated by other motives than a desire for sudden wealth. When the country became colonized by men who sought liberty to worship God, ——men of lofty pur- poses, willing to undergo sufferings and danger in order to plant the seeds of a higher civilization, ——then there arose new forms of social and political life. Such men were those who colonized New England. And, say what you will, in spite of all the disagreeable sides of the Puritan character, it was the Puritans who gave a new impulse to civilization in the New World. They founded schools and colleges and churches. They introduced a new form of political life by their town-meetings, in which liberty was nurtured, and all local improve- ments were regulated. It was the autonomy of towns on which the political structure of New England rested. In them was born the true representative government which has gradually spread towards the West. The colonies were embryo States, ——States afterwards to be bound together by a stronger tie than that of a league. The New England States, after the war of Independ- ence, were the defenders and advocates of a federal and central power. An entirely new political organization was gradually formed, resting equally on such pillars as independent townships and independent States, sand these represented by delegates in a national centre. So we believe America was discovered, not so much to furnish a field for infinite material expansion, with European arts and fashions, ——which would simply as- similate America to the Old World, with all its dan- gers and vices and follies, ——but to introduce new forms of government, new social institutions, new customs and manners, new experiments in liberty, new religious organizations, new modes to ameliorate the necessary evils of life. It was discovered that men might labor and enjoy the fruits of industry in a new mode, unfet- tered by the restraints which the institutions of Europe imposed. America is a new field in which to try experi- ments in government and social life, which cannot be tried in the older nations without sweeping and danger- ous revolutions; and new institutions have arisen which are our pride and boast, and which are the wonder and admiration of Europe. America is the only country under the sun in which there is self-government, ——a government which purely represents the wishes of the people, where universal suffrage is not a mockery. And if America has a destiny to fulfil for other nations, she must give them something more valuable than reaping machines, palace cars, and horse railroads. She must give, not only machinery to abridge labor, but institu- tions and ideas to expand the mind and elevate the soul, ——something by which the poor can rise and assert their rights. Unless something is developed here which cannot be developed in other countries, in the way of new spiritual and intellectual forces, which have a con- servative influence, then I cannot see how America can long continue to be the home and refuge of the poor and miserable of other lands. A new and better spirit must vivify schools an colleges and philanthropic en- terprises than that which has prevailed in older nations. Unless something new is born here which has a peculiar power to save, wherein will America ultimately differ from other parts of Christendom? We must have schools in which the heart as well as the brain is educated, and newspapers which aspire to something higher than to fan prejudices and appeals to perverted tastes. Our hope is not in books which teach infidelity under the name of science, nor in pulpits which cannot be sustained without sensational oratory, nor in journals which trade on the religious sentiments of the people, nor in Sabbath-school books which are an insult to the human understanding, nor in colleges which fit youth merely for making money, nor in schools of technology to give an impulse to material interests, nor in legis- latures controlled by monopolists, nor in judges elected by demagogues, nor in philanthropic societies to venti- late unpractical theories. These will neither renovate nor conserve what is most precious in life. Unless a nation grows morally as well as materially, there is something wrong at the core of society. As I have said, no material expansion will avail, if society becomes rotten at the core. America is a glorious boon to civili- zation, but only as she fulfils a new mission in history, ——not to become more potent in material forces, but in those spiritual agencies which prevent corruption and decay. An infidel professor, calling himself a savant, may tell you that there is nothing certain or great but in the direction of science to utilities, even as he may glory in a philosophy which ignores a creator and takes cognizance only of a creation. As I survey the growing and enormous moral evils which degrade society, here as everywhere, in spite of Bunker Hills and Plymouth Rocks, and all the windy declamations of politicians and philanthropists, and all the advance in useful mechanisms, I am sometimes tempted to propound inquiries which suggest the old, mournful story of the decline and ruin of States and Empires. I ask myself, Why should America be an exception to the uniform fate of nations, as history has demonstrated? Why should not good institutions be perverted here, as in all other countries and ages of the world? Where has civilization shown any striking triumphs, except in inventions to abridge the labors of mankind and make men comfortable and rich? Is there nothing before us, then, but the triumphs of material life, to end as mournfully as the materialism of antiquity? If so, then Christianity is a most dismal failure, is a defeated power, like all other forms of religion which failed to save. But is it a failure? Are we really swinging back to Paganism? Is the time to be hailed when all religions will be considered by the philosopher as equally false and equally useful? Is there nothing more cheerful for us to contemplate than what the old Pagan philosophy holds out, ——man des- tined to live like brutes or butterflies, and pass away into the infinity of time and space, like inert matter, decomposed, absorbed, and entering into new and ever- lasting combinations? Is America to become like Eu- rope and Asia in all essential elements of life Has she no other mission than to add to perishable glories? Is she to teach the world nothing new in education and philanthropy and government? Are all her struggles in behalf of liberty in vain? We all know that Christianity is the only hope of the world. The question is, whether America is or is not more favorable for its healthy developments and applications than the other countries of Christendom are. We believe that it is. If it is not, then America is only a new field for the spread and triumph of mate- rial forces. If it is, we may look forward to such im- provements in education, in political institutions, in social life, in religious organizations, in philanthropi- cal enterprise, that the country will be sought by the poor and enslaved classes of Europe more for its moral and intellectual advantages than for its mines or farms; the objects of the Puritan settlers will be gained, and the grandeur of the discovery of a New World will be established. I can't believe this movie could get made nowadays. There are THOUSANDS of comments in just a day lamenting that a single movie which doesn't follow The Resistance is somehow suspect. Democrats do not believe in democracy. It's ironic that a movie that set out to clear one person's name wound up dragging another one (the female reporter) through the mud. I didn't know he'd died. Excellent story, very engaging; thanks. Great movie-very intense and realistic. Obviously the FBI and the Media are the bad guys-maybe the Carter Page movie 20 years from now will be just as gripping.

Many of the great spiritual traditions told of how the material world came into being out of a nameless domain. Some traditions have spoken of the 'cosmic egg' from which form emerged; or, as in the Old Testament, out of the dark and formless deep where the spirit of God moved: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth; and the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:1-1:2) The Hindu spiritual traditions of India speak of an underlying reality that is Brahman - a reality that is eternal and eternally unchanging. The world of space and time that we are familiar with is known as lila, which describes our physical world as the playground of unceasing creative play within Brahman. In terms of this cosmology humanity is indeed at play in the fields of the Lord. The ancient Hindu Vedic rishis told that the essence of all things in the material world belonged to Akasha. A Sanskrit term, Akasha refers to the fifth element of the cosmos, beyond, air (vata) fire (agni) water (jal) earth (prithivi) The concept of Akasha is similar to the later western notions of ether - a space field that contains all the elements within itself. In the late 6th century BC Pythagoras spoke of the 'ether' as the fifth element of the world, in addition to earth, air, fire and water. In more modern terminology we see similarities with the notion of the underlying quantum vacuum (or plenum, matrix) that is described as the energetic sea of the cosmos from which matter-reality manifests. The Akasha/ether/quantum matrix is the cosmic energy domain from which everything has emerged, and into which everything will ultimately return. Western streams of philosophic thought also speak of a domain beyond space and time. According to Plato there was a realm of Forms and Ideas - a domain of Pure Forms - beyond our space and time, and that our material world is only an image or copy of this real, pure world beyond. This pure realm was also spoken of by other Hellenic philosophers: Pythagoras referred to it as Kosmos, and Plotinus as The One. Perhaps the most famous illustration of Plato's thinking is his allegory of The Cave. In this allegory Plato describes a group of people who have lived all their lives chained up and facing the wall of a cave. All they can see is the blank cave wall that lies in front of them. The opening of the cave is behind them, and the light that enters casts shadows on the far wall of the cave. Upon this wall, day after day, the chained people watch shadows move across as they cannot turn around and see the 'real' objects that pass behind them. Thus, they view these shadows as their reality and ascribe forms, reason, and life to them. This is the illusion - the shadows from beyond - that we ascribe as our 'reality ' and give meaning to. Similarly, the Chinese sage Lao-Tze (or Laozi) spoke of all things originating in the Tao/Dao as the unseen root of all material things. The Tao is both the originator (the source) of all things, and the destination to which all things eventually return. It is the unobservable and nameless no-space, no-time, no-form essence that our words fail. Are these non-spaces the realms where our gods dwell? Our myths may be the only threads that connect us with such realms; they are the narratives that remain in the earthly domain to help jolt our memories. In his theory of anamnesis Plato says humanity possesses knowledge of its past, only that we have forgotten this knowledge and so we need to rediscover the knowledge within us. Plato wrote that humanity could only know the 'real world' in the form of memories. That is, human thought was really a form of recollection, and that humankind generally existed within a state of collective amnesia, having only fragments of recollection as reference points for reality. Plato was suggesting that humanity had lost - or fallen - from an earlier state of heightened awareness and now had only traces of this memory in their collective psyche as a reminder. In ancient Greek, truth is called aletheia which means not forgetting; and in Greek mythology before the human soul incarnates into this world it drinks from Lethe, the river of Forgetfulness and one of the five rivers of the underworld, so that it cannot remember its divine origins. Similarly, there is a Jewish legend that speaks of how we are struck on the mouth by an angel before birth so that we cannot speak of our pre-birth divine origins. Humanity is being told through these and other related myths that we need to learn how to remember - that truth is re-collection, not cognition. We arrive in this earthly reality full of cosmic glory, only that we lack the key, the crucial guide, to unlock our memories and unleash the flood of knowing. When we come across the scattered symbols and signs of truth, we inherently intuit and sense deep down some great significance. Yet our minds are incapable of grasping the intangibleness of this hidden mystery. And that is how our lives play out, as we slip as souls within a playground of signs that are invested with ultimate meaning. We need to find the Arianne's thread to help us through this labyrinth that we find ourselves in, and to remember that we have our origins in the Primary Imagination. Our lives are not only unique creations but are acts of re-creation. They are attempts at entering once again into a lost remembrance which lies so far and yet so close to us. The 13th century Persian poet Jalāl ad-Dīn Rūmī wrote that, The Truth is closer to us than our own jugular vein. And yet so vain do we search, as if we have fallen away from true remembrance. Myths Lost and Regained One of humanity's most enduring mythic narratives is what is commonly referred to as the Fall. What this generally suggests is a break with - or fall away from - another state. This is often interpreted as a break away from a heightened state of connection and awareness; or, a disconnection from the living truth. This implies that collective images and myths reappear in our minds, in our histories, as grand archetypes that serve as signifiers to assist humanity in its recollection of lost memories. Touching upon this, Carl Gustav Jung wrote that, Our psyche is set up in accord with the structure of the universe, and what happens in the macrocosm likewise happens in the infinitesimal and most subjective reaches of the psyche. 1 Here, Jung is highlighting the distinct correspondence between the human psyche and it's synchronization with the grander universe of which we are a part. This emphasizes the notion of the participatory mind, a concept that was known - if not articulated - amongst our pre-modern ancestors. It has been suggested by various psychologists that humanity resonates closely with the notion of the 'Fall from Paradise' because we carry within our collective consciousness vestiges of a remembrance. That is, we have a deep intuitive sense that we once belonged to something 'higher. and to which we may one day return. It seems that within our interior selves lies the hope of returning to something once 'lost. a Paradise Lost, or some sacred state of communion. This idea has been expressed in allegorical form in many tales, such as in this one, The Precious Jewel. adapted from Eastern sources: In a remote realm of perfection, there was a just monarch who had a wife and a wonderful son and daughter. They all lived together in happiness. One day the father called his children before him and said: The time has come, as it does for all. You are to go down, an infinite distance, to another land. You shall seek and find and bring back a precious Jewel. The travelers were conducted in disguise to a strange land, whose inhabitants almost all lived a dark existence. Such was the effect of this place that the two lost touch with each other, wandering as if asleep. From time to time they saw phantoms, similitudes of their country and of the Jewel, but such was their condition that these things only increased the depth of their reveries, which they now began to take as reality. When news of his children's plight reached the king, he sent word by a trusted servant, a wise man: Remember your mission, awaken from your dream, and remain together. With this message they roused themselves, and with the help of their rescuing guide they dared the monstrous perils which surrounded the Jewel, and by its magic aid returned to their realm of light, there to remain in increased happiness for evermore. 2 This allegory/parable, amongst others similar, reveals that a latent message lays hidden deep within us, and which acts as a chord of remembrance keeping us connected with something 'essential' yet forgotten. Mythologists Joseph Campbell and Mircea Eliade have both shown that one story in particular threads its way through nearly all traditions and myths - the story of a lost idyllic golden age. This mythical narrative tells of the hero's journey to restore the world to its former glory and high state: a tale of loss and the need for heroic restoration. It is also a journey to reconnect ourselves with a sense of the sacred; to restore the bond with a cosmos that enfolds humanity within a universal sense of meaning, where the human psyche merges into the significant whole. Many myths recovered from the past, and from indigenous tribes, reveal a worldview of our ancients that accepted all things as part of a living, conscious, and sacred cosmos. Within this cosmological view all life was viewed as connected with an animating energy that interweaved throughout. As mythological researcher Richard Heinberg writes: I feel compelled toward the view that our cultural memories of a Golden Age of harmony are the residue of a once-universal understanding of the spiritual dimension of human consciousness, and are at the same time memories of how contact with that dimension has been almost completely severed. 3 The contact may appear almost severed, yet traces of it have remained in various traditions, some more obscure than others. This once bygone state that the stories and myths refer to as the Golden Age - or Paradise - can also be regarded as a metaphor for an evolved state of consciousness as well as a highly evolved state of civilization. Humankind's state is that of having fallen into the grip of gross matter, and of having left behind a finer awareness of subtle energies. We have, as all major spiritual traditions commonly state, entered into a realm of separation from a divine or sacred source. Mircea Eliade, in his The Sacred and the Profane, writes that every historical culture regarded the human condition as being under a temporary spell of unnatural limitation and separateness. Also, that our world now contains symbols and signs that serve to jolt human consciousness into some degree of reawakened awareness and remembrance, such as in the tale of the 'Precious Jewel' told above. Eliade reminds us that in so-called 'primitive' societies the act of understanding the symbol can help to succeed in 'living the universal. Similarly, mythologist Joseph Campbell describes how the aim of ancient spiritual practices, tribal myths, and shamanic teachings was to assist in recovering a lost mode of awareness. It is easy to conclude that the myth of Paradise (or of a Golden Age) represents an innate and universal longing, deep within humanity, for a return to a state of tranquility from which we have become separated. Metaphorically, it may indicate that the inner being of the human, when in its natural and essential state, is in balance and harmony. Perhaps there have been historical ages in which human beings shared a state of oneness or union with all life and with their environment, and that this peak of civilization was indeed lost. The Hopi legend of the 'First People' talks of a time in the ancient past when people, felt as one and understood one another without talking. as if suggesting a form of collective communion. This legend describes a time when humans on the planet manifested a form of suprasensory perception, and where dialogue often occurred between various entities. Anthropologist Roger Wescott writes that: Moreover, most mythic traditions concur in asserting that, in the Golden Age, human beings associated easily and often with beings that were discarnate or only intermittently incarnate, ranging from awesome cosmic deities to playful local spirits. 4 Eliade, likewise, noted in his research that ancient myths spoke of a friendship between animals and human, with even knowledge of their respective languages. Eliade speculates that the shamanic imagery and/or visions of human transformation into an animal may be a metaphorical account of re-establishing a connection that was lost 'at the dawn of time. According to Eliade, the shaman goes into a transcendental state in order to 'abolish the present human condition. which is regarded as a resultant state from the 'Fall. and thus to re-enter into the natural condition of 'primordial man' as it was during the Golden Age. 5 Heinberg considers whether: …paradise may be seen as serving a specific function, as a design for living embedded in the circuitry of human consciousness. All biological organisms, including human beings, contain elements of design… Perhaps we also contain within us a neurological or psychic program for the optimal design of social and spiritual relations between ourselves, the Cosmos, and Nature - a design of telepathic oneness and interspecies communion that represents the goal toward which our individual and collective experience would naturally tend to unfold. 6 Heinberg is suggesting here that memories of Paradise/Golden Age may not only, or necessarily, refer to a physical reality or time but serve to activate and catalyze human neurological and psychic functioning into continued evolutionary growth. The memory, then, is not only as a remembrance of things past (as Proust would say) but may also function as a 'design' wired into us as a social and spiritual guide during dark ages - those times when our psychic, and thus also physical, states are low and separated from a sacred source. Similarly, various religious, spiritual, and indigenous traditions all refer to this rupture (our 'Fall' as a descent into greed, egoism, fear, and selfishness. It is a state where the focus is almost entirely upon gross materialism. Gnostic, Hindu, and Buddhist traditions also refer to humanity forgetting its true purpose; of how the distraction of, and attraction to, the physical world produces a continued state of separation. Teutonic Norse myths state that a renewal of the world would only come after great destruction in which a period of chaos and disorder would arise that would see humans commit many degrading and tragic acts. There are also numerous accounts in ancient and sacred texts that depict the theme of cyclic destruction and renewal, from biblical accounts, Hindu scriptures, and Tibetan narratives. Our myths, stories, and narratives may serve to remind us of where we have been, and to where we need to return. Yet can we rely solely on the old myths, or, Are we now in need of new mythologies? After all, where did all the gods go? New Mythologies It has been said that our old gods are dead or dying. The many gods of times past were abandoned in favor of the one god concept with the rise of monotheistic religions. With this shift away from multiple gods - which played a more direct, intervening role in human affairs - a more individualized sense of self and self-consciousness began to emerge. The spiritual focus was now not on the interaction with multiple gods but of a relation with a single source that was transcendent and beyond the lowly human. Humanity no longer played ball together with their godly caretakers. The human psyche slowly became separated from a close communion with the gods. This psychic bond, or participation, between cosmic forces and the human soul gradually became severed, leaving the individual more to their own devices and further away from a 'far off' god. This break from the interventionist gods is likely to have played a role in the shift of human consciousness more towards its own self-involvement, which amplified the presence and dominance of the ego. Along with this shift came the art of personal reflection, and the manifestation of individual thinking. This can be seen in the external transition from ancient Egyptian spiritual traditions to the human philosophy of the Greeks. This marked a shift toward knowledge as grasped by the human mind, and thus led to the increased belief that no gods were needed to understand such lofty concepts. Divinity, the realm of the gods, became a place to which certain elite human minds could broker access. This was seen as liberating the human soul from the direct and all-powerful influence of the gods in daily life. A new independence arose within the life of humanity that preceded an era of increasing human autonomy at play within a material world. The human being was now born into an environment where the gods had withdrawn. Humanity was now left to stand on its own spiritual feet, and to learn to navigate through a world given over to them by their gods. And yet it was precisely this kind of environment which made it possible for an individual human being to develop a sense of full responsibility for their own behavior and spiritual state. The soul life of the human had now become their own task to contend with, and could no longer be seen as under the sway of external transcendental forces. Although this shift placed the onus of development upon the human self, it also dissolved the reciprocal understanding between human and cosmos. By defining ourselves independent of the gods we also defined ourselves as similarly being separated from Nature. This process of separation between our interior and exterior lives was drawn out over centuries, and further exacerbated through orthodox religious thinking, scientific rationalism, Cartesian philosophy, and attitudes to the human body. We are now coming to the end of the influence of the Greco-Roman/Judeo-Christian era. As philosopher Jeremy Naydler notes: It has achieved its purpose, which was to make us more individuated, more self- rather than god-centered in our soul-life, and thus more free. But now there is a need to become aware again of inner, spiritual realities, but to become aware of them grounded in our own sense of self and with a clear and discriminating intelligence with which we can once more turn toward them. 7 Individual selfhood came at a great cost. In fact, it could only come about when the previous gods had faded from human consciousness. And yet from this came the emergence of self-consciousness, the focus on individual selfhood, and the possibility for self-transcendence through individual inner work. That is, to take the path back toward a cosmic, sacred communion through self-volition and individual choice. This path back to the gods (the sacred source) does not imply 'going out' there - to reach them in some realm beyond - but rather suggests allowing them back into the human psyche. This means receiving the sacred connection once again within the inner life/self of the human. We could phrase it as bringing the sacred impulse back down into material life - the re-sacralization of the material plane. It could be said that human destiny is to know the infinite without leaving the finite - both exist simultaneously and both are necessary. Spirit is not recognized by it being something other than the material, but by overcoming its otherness. It is implicit within all material forms, and is in communion with all entities. In the sacred traditions spirit is a living recognition, not an inanimate one. That is, sacred spirit wishes to be known beyond its otherness. Our multiple gods, as depth psychology informs us, also represent aspects of the human psyche. Astrology places a similar pattern upon the planets, as their alignment influences psychic correspondences and can affect the human physically, mentally, and emotionally. In some of the most ancient spiritual traditions that came out of Egypt and Mesopotamia thousands of years ago, the realm of Spirit existed in a transcendental pure form beyond matter. It was human destiny for the privileged capable few to ascend through rigorous trial and initiation toward this otherworld and seek a connection with it so that it may manifest through them upon the material plane. Hence such cultures were star-orientated as this represented a source beyond the terrestrial earth. In more modern times, the implication has shifted to a view that sees Spirit as having its destiny to become implicated in matter. Together, spirit and matter form the necessary communion. The re-spiritualization - the re-sacralization - of the material world must come about through humanity's involvement. The human must embrace the cosmos within themselves, and to bring it 'down to earth. so to speak. This is now a mass endeavor, which suggests that the time for the elite special few initiates is over. In other words, where once a 'higher' state of consciousness was first developed through exceptional individuals, it is now to be developed through the mass by receptive individuals and communities connecting together across physical and temporal boundaries. A re-sacralization is required on a global scale - a sacred revival for our times - this very thing may be brought into play within our global civilization if we transition to a genuine relationship with our developing technologies. Likewise, the natural world is not an obstacle that needs to be overcome if we are to strive towards a sacred communion and understanding. On the contrary, the natural world is itself the playground upon which sacred energies move through, and within which lies the soul of the world. The old mythologies placed the gods within the supernatural world, where Nature was something to move through and beyond. Yet the old mythologies are no longer with us for they no longer serve the same purpose. They too have been transcended for we are in a different era - an altogether different temporal and spatial state. The old mythological world of archetypal energies has now been fused into an order where the supernatural, the natural, and the human mind-soul merge together. We are participating in bringing the sacred back into the material realm - in bringing the gods back home! The sacred source is to be encountered through ourselves and not within another world; through normal human consciousness rather than its denial. We can say that, humanity has entered a new stage in the unfolding cosmological drama, and that this stage is to do with the infinite rediscovering itself within the sphere of the finite. 8 From these ashes a new mythology must arise, one that has been gestating within the inner reaches of humankind for some time already. It has been suggested that we are in a battle for the Western soul, as we have been largely sleeping through crisis after crisis of the spirit. A new mythology is rapidly becoming both a social and spiritual necessity, as our old frameworks and worldviews dissolve from usefulness. Mythologies have the power to conduct and guide us through our lifetimes, as a companion upon the psycho-spiritual journey of transformation. A mythology is a set of figures and symbols that can reflect and shape a state of mind; they can serve as a perceptual framework. They can be our filters and our friends, but they neither belong to us nor any particular locale. They are available for everyone, and are beyond the individual mind. According to Joseph Campbell, arguably one of the most respected mythologists of the 20th century, The life of a mythology derives from the vitality of its symbols as metaphors delivering, not simply the idea, but a sense of actual participation in such a realization of transcendence, infinity, and abundance… The first and most essential service of a mythology is this one, of opening the mind and heart to the utter wonder of all being, and the second service, then, is cosmological: of representing the universe and whole spectacle of nature, both as known to the mind and as beheld by the eye…9 Mythology then should serve to assist participation in our own transcendence amid the spectacle of the cosmos. Unfortunately, it is when mythologies become locked-in as social, political, and religious control systems that the human developmental path becomes distorted and muddy underfoot. Myths emphasize commonality and offer us a transcendental communion, if we don't corrupt them into further mental prisons. It is essential therefore that the new mythologies for a sacred revival inspire within humanity a wish for interiorizing the cosmological impulse that is pervasive and which irradiates our reality. Clint Eastwood has done it again. He has made another awesome film. My god this was good. I was excited for it but like man it blew my expectations away. The story was just so beautifully executed and written. The acting was superb. Let me just get this out of the way and just that Paul Walter Houser did an AMAZING job with this character. Every scene he acted almost made me shed a tear. There was one scene in particular that gets into the spoiler range but in this scene, he's sitting at a table and he starts crying while he's eating a donut, I literally couldn't take the smile off my face while watching this scene. This movie isn't just a hero film. It's also a friendship film. "How far will friends go to help other friends." This was definitely one of 2019s most underrated films. Soooo good.

It was hard to ignore the blisters on Christines fingers and the squelchy rot of my doppelgangers, but I felt it was my duty to let them touch me. Somehow I knew they drew comfort from me. But it finally grew intolerable, so I pulled away and stood up. My doppelganger instantly started screaming and Christine began to cry. Leaving the hall was almost physically impossible. Each step took monumental effort and the hall seemed to stretch before me, expanding half a step for each one I took. Upon exiting the hall, however, their voices ceased and a weight I hadnt even noticed evaporated. Once upstairs, I felt lighter, safer, and clearer. Without them whispering in my ear, I could make plans. Unfortunately I had nothing with which to make plans. I had no phone or car, and the city was four hours away on foot. Id just about resigned myself to walking when I heard a car pull into the driveway. I rushed to the window, and sure enough it was Michel. Even from two stories up, his body language telegraphed anger and misery. As I watched, he slammed the car door and stalked into the house. “Rachel? ” Cool and impersonal, painfully sharp. “Rachel! ” I wondered how much he knew, if a security camera had caught me talking to the dead women. Since there was no denying it in any case, I went to the bedroom door. “Yes? ” He came upstairs. “Please get ready. Were meeting – colleagues –” he spat the word, the only hint of emotion in the sentence – “for dinner shortly. ” It was so mundane, I wanted to laugh. This was what he was angry about? “What? ” “Dinner, ” he repeated coldly. “With colleagues. At eight. Get ready. ” “Your colleagues? ” “Last I checked, you have none, so yes. Mine. ” He rummaged through the closet, then pulled out a red dress and tossed it on the bed. “Wear that. ” I crossed my arms over my chest, trying to make sense of this new, cold persona. “I dont want to go. ” “It isnt up for discussion. ” “What the hell do you –” He whirled around with such ferocity I skittered away. His expression was cold and angry, but his eyes were frantic. Despite everything; I was relieved; whatever was wrong with him had nothing to do with me. “Rachel. Please get ready. ” I reached meekly for the dress. Looking contrite, he stepped forward and gently circled my wrists with his hands. Calmness overtook me; for the first time in many days, I felt relaxed. “This is very important, ” he said. “Just do as I say and follow my lead, as you always do. ” He took his hands away. I reached for him absently, fingers brushing his chest. He finally smiled and twisted a lock of my hair around his finger. I could have collapsed for relief. “Dont worry. Well have a good time. ” The assurance buoyed me; I believed him utterly and wanted to keep him happy. Nothing seemed important by comparison – not the dead women, not my past, not a mysterious alternate universe or my dire suspicions about my husband. I was happy, I was safe, I was in love, and we were going out to dinner. Deep in my bones, I knew this wasnt right. But every time anxiety gained a foothold, Id look to Michel for reassurance, and he would smile, and I would feel elation and relief in equal measure. The drive to dinner was uneventful. I didnt feel the need to speak – why bother, when I felt so happy, so beautifully content? – and he was clearly preoccupied. Every once in a while Id feel a surge of unease. Whenever that discomfort reared its head, Michel reached for my hand and all was well again. The restaurant was small and intimate, lit with dim golden lamps and candlelight. Vines crawled up the walls. An impeccably dressed woman led us upstairs. As we passed through, several patrons nodded respectfully. Some even craned their necks as we passed. Michel and I took our seats at a cozy table. To my surprise, Richard was there, as well as a woman about Michels age; two middle-aged men who appeared to be twins; and an elderly man with wide, glassy eyes. When Richard saw me, his face broke into a wicked little smile. “We meet again. ” A sense of disquiet reared up, but Michels hand was suddenly on mine, and buoyant happiness settled over me again. I didnt speak much; there was no point. Richard cracked a few jokes and lavished attention on me, which was mildly uncomfortable but sort of funny to me; such a young man trying to make a move on me in front of my husband. His boss, no less. The woman and the twins largely ignored Richard and made polite conversation. The old man, however, remained silent as we drank and ate. He stared at Richard most of the evening, but occasionally would glance at me. His eyes were wide, wet, and swollen, as if hed been crying recently. Overwhelming sympathy flooded me; how terrible that this poor man couldnt enjoy such a wonderful dinner! I deliberately offered encouraging smiles and tried several times to engage him in conversation, but failed. It finally occurred to me that he was probably deaf or mute, maybe both. Annoyingly, Richard interrupted me whenever I tried to speak with the old man. He constantly reached for my hands and leaned across the table in a manner that was far too intimate, and thus incredibly troubling. I wanted to address it, wanted to chastise him, but whenever the words rose to my lips I felt Michels fingers tracing gentle circles in my palm. Conversation progressed. I paid no attention; I felt too sorry for the old man. He looked vaguely familiar, but I simply couldnt place him. His behavior confused and saddened me. His eyes kept widening and flicking between Richard and I. Finally, I realized Richard was saying my name, and apparently had been for a long while. “Rachel, ” he repeated. “Raaaaachel. ” I frowned, then smiled quizzically. “Im sorry. I missed that. ” “I want to show you the view from the top. They have a balcony here, and the view truly is phenomenal. ” He looked quite beautiful in the dim light, almost angelic. But I didnt want to go with him. I wanted to stay with Michel and the sad old man. I looked at my husband, intending to voice my reluctance, but he squeezed my hand and gently said, “Go on. It is lovely. ” I didnt like it, but that was that. I stood up. Richard led me to a flight of stairs. Unable to help myself, I glanced back over my shoulder. Michel was staring after us, fixated and unreadable. I gave him a nervous smile that he didnt return. Richard took up the stairs and down a hall, past the doors to several conference rooms. Cold air washed over me the moment we exited onto the roof. I looked out eagerly, expecting a stunning view, but was disappointed. There was nothing remarkable about it. Richard casually twisted his fingers into mine and pulled me to the edge with a wide, assured smile. The moment our hands touched, my head exploded into a pounding, crippling pain that literally doubled me over. I was vaguely aware that Richard had dropped to his haunches and put his arms around me, but that made it worse; whenever he touched me, a jagged bolt of pain ripped through my skull. “Im sorry, ” I whispered. “Give me just…just a second. ” The moment I pulled away, pain abated. I beelined for the door. At the threshold I risked a surreptitious glance at Richard, who was white-faced and clearly furious. Disconcerted but not yet angry, I hurried inside. Warmth and dim golden light welcomed me. Excitement and anticipation returned. Id be back with Michel soon, any moment now, and then – Suddenly one of the conference room doors opened and a withered hand reached out. I took it reflexively, and in response it tugged insistently. Without a thought, I obeyed and entered the room. It was the old man. His large, wet eyes looked impossibly bright in the light streaming through the window. Sympathy flooded me again. I wanted nothing more than to punish whoever had hurt him. He tried to speak, but tremors shook him, breaking up his words before they left his mouth. Finally he said, “Rachel. ” The door opened. I turned guiltily, expecting Richard, but it was Michel. My face broke into a wide smile, which he reciprocated this time. “What are you two doing in here? ” he asked gently. “I think the gentleman here got lost, ” I confessed. “Lets all go back together, then. ” Michel returned us to the table. Giddy contentment subsumed me again. The rest of the meal passed in a happy, golden blur. The only sour note was Richard; he watched me hungrily the entire time with an expression I hated. I ignored him, instead lavishing attention on Michel and the old man. Toward the end, the old man smiled and reached for my hand. I took his eagerly. His fingers instantly twisted. I tried to let go but he squeezed back insistently. His fingers wriggled again, then clumsily deposited a slip of paper into my palm. Michel suddenly spoke: “Richard, can you come with me a moment? I have paperwork for you. I dont know that itll wait until Monday. ” Richard gave me one more burning look, then exited with Michel. The old man tapped my hand urgently. Of course, I remembered; the paper. I gave him a genial smile, then opened my palm. It was a note: IM SORRY I WILL FORGET BUT PLEASE HELP ME AGAIN Below that was a phone number alongside the words: CALL FOR JON It was sad but so sweet. He must have dementia. Even so, looking at the note caused an odd, urgent twinge. A compulsion. I excused myself and went to the restroom, where I promptly slid the note into my bra. On my way back, Richard sidled up beside me and, before I could stop him, gently pressed me back against the wall. “Were going to see each other soon, ” he said. “Permanently, I hope. ” He swept a sheaf of hair away from my face, studying me intently. “We're almost done. ” He - his touch, his hungry, shameless eyes, his terrible behavior - finally broke my reverie. I ducked away, breathlessly angry, and opened my mouth to yell. But then there were hands on my shoulder, strong and familiar, and a sense of calm washed over me again. “Are you all right? ” Michel asked quietly. “I want to go, ” I said. “Then we will. ” Michel excused us graciously, with smiles and handshakes and apologies all around, including to the old man. Even in my strange, dreamy state, the terror on the old mans face made me incredibly sad. Only when we were on our way home did the utter bizarreness of the evening hit me. “What, ” I asked, “was wrong with Richard? ” Michel absently reached for my hand. “No. ” I withdrew. “Dont do that. Why was he acting that way? ” Against my will I felt my mood leveling, felt that deceptive happiness overtake me. “Shh, ” Michel soothed. Its all right. If it comes up again, just give him what he wants. ” Thomass face, imperious and impersonally contemptuous, flitted through my mind. Hed said that, too. Those exact words, but about Michel. It took all of my strength to hold on to my profound anxiety, to not let the quiet euphoria draw it away. I kept thinking the old mans note and the phone number. As we crawled through the crowded streets, I caught a glimpse of a pay phone. Right in front of a gas station, like all good American pay phones. “Michel? ” I said. “Can you pull over? I need a restroom. ” He shrugged helplessly. “Do you see anywhere to pull over? ” “Okay. ” I opened the door. Ill be right back. ” I dashed down the street, drawing a few stares. Michel shouted after me. I intentionally ran in the opposite direction, then cut across an alley and came up behind the gas station. I peered around the side. Michels car was nowhere to be seen; hed clearly been forced along with traffic. I darted to the payphone, dug the slip of paper out of my dress, and dialed collect. I held my breath. On the seventh ring, someone answered. “Who are you? ” “Doesnt matter. Im calling for Jon. ” Low, slick laughter. “You sure? Hes hard to catch, and not all that talented anymore. Weve got better. ” “Im positive. ” “The usual or the special? ” “Both, ” I said nonsensically. “That's dangerous. I'll be fine. Suit yourself. Where do we pick you up? ” I glanced around frantically. Still no sign of Michel, but if hed gone around the block I had seconds left. “How about you drop him off? ” “Really? ” “Yes. ” I gave him directions to the corner by our house. Rocks and a copse of trees were set back from the road there, offering some privacy. “Thats an unorthodox location. ” “I want him there tomorrow. ” “When? ” Oh God, what if Michel didnt go into work tomorrow? “One p. m. ” “How long? ” “An hour. ” “Youre brave. Itll be five hundred. Well wait for five minutes. If you aren't there, we're leaving. No exceptions. ” Michels car nosed around the corner. “Got it. Bye. ” I hung up and dashed into the gas station, pushing past a line of irritable people to get to the bathroom, where I crumpled the paper and flushed it down the toilet. Then I washed up, blotting the sweat off my face, and exited. Michel was waiting by the door. He grabbed my wrist and dragged me out. “What were you doing? ” he demanded. “You ran into traffic! How stupid can you be? ” I tried to answer, but it all overwhelmed me – fear, confusion, revulsion, anxiety – and I burst into tears. Seized with a stroke of inspiration, I said, “Its Richard. I didnt…I couldnt…it felt wrong and you just told me to…to give him what he…” Michels face softened and he drew me close. “That isnt what I meant. Im sorry. It was a poor choice of words. ” He kissed my forehead. “Lets go home. ” We got home and went to bed, but I didnt sleep. In the morning, he went to work. I pulled the remaining cash from my computer bag and sat down to wait. Minutes passed too quickly. At quarter past twelve, I walked to the rendezvous point. I arrived early, so I went to sit on the boulders in the trees and waited while the wind rattled the leaves and kicked up dust. A few minutes later, a nondescript car pulled onto the median. I stood and went to meet it. The back door opened and Thomas tumbled out, blinking in the bright light. He had a dreamy smile that evaporated when he saw me. He tried to climb back inside, but the driver got out, grabbed him, and dragged him to me. Thomas watched me with wide, hopeless eyes as I handed the driver his money. I pointed to the trees. “Take him there. ” Thomas heaved a sob as the man marched him over. I followed behind, feeling inexpressibly guilty. “One hour, ” the man told me, and left. Thomas watched him go, trembling and clearly aching to run after him. Once the man was no longer in sight, I held my arms out in a conciliatory gesture. Thomas reared back, tears flooding his eyes. “Calm down. I dont want to hurt you. Its Rachel. I know you remember me. I'm Rachel. ” He shook his head. A weird, creepy smile spread over his face. “They killed Rachel. Youre whats left, youre Gabrielle. ” “Im definitely Rachel. They killed me, then Michel took me to the sea. ” Thomas finally stilled. “Do you know what that means? ” “He brought you back, ” he said slowly. I shrugged nervously. “I guess. I dont remember much of anything, Thomas. ” He nodded. “Thats the sea. Yes, thats what happens. ” His face twisted and tears spilled down his face. “Thats why you forgot to save me. ” He turned to look at me. His face was thin and haggard, fine bone structure nearly obliterated by pain and abuse and endless sun, but his eyes were the same: bright, golden caramel, arresting as the day I first met him. “You forgot me. Forgot your promise. Forgot you loved me. ” He dissolved into sobs. I fought a lump in my throat and leaned down, intending to hug him, but he shoved me away. “I knew you would. he said. "You had the hierarchy on your side. You were the strong one so you belong to the Bull, which makes you safe. You cross to the sea whenever you want to. I only cross when Im hurting. So they hurt me, they hurt me and all the rest of us and used our pain to give sacrifice to open up the other worlds. But it was okay. I hated you sometimes because Im weak, but you promised to be there and you were, you were, you were. ” His face darkened and clouded, hatred mingling with the suffering. “Until him. The Bluebeard. ” “Why do you call him that? ” I asked sharply, but hed already devolved into another rant. “Its because of him. You didnt know any better, its okay. I understand. You couldnt help it. But its his fault. He broke you down, he made Gabrielle, he made you into the Bull. He hates me. He made you believe what he wants you to believe, made you see what he wants you to see because all the worlds a stage. ” Shivers rolled down my spine, convulsive and almost painful. “Why do you call him that? Why are you calling him a Bluebeard? ” Thomas looked at me strangely. “Not Bluebeard, Rachel. Bluebird. Hes a Bluebird. They control our minds. Dont you remember? ” He looked away, distant and dreamy and so obviously frightened. “Did you protect Richard? ” “What? What about Richard? ” His face contorted into a rictus of panicked defeat. “Oh, no, ” he moaned. “Oh, no. ” “Thomas, look at me. Just look at me. What about Rich–” “Dont ask about him anymore! ” he shrieked. “This is all his fault! ” “Okay, Im sorry. I have one more question, and then you can go back. ” He kept shaking his head. “Did you report me as missing? ” “Yes. I was worried. You were gone and so was the baby. ” He looked up at me, golden eyes swollen and shimmering with tears. “What happened to the baby? ” “What baby? ” His earnest hope dissipated before my eyes, leaving brokenness in its wake. Panic surged through me. “Thomas, what baby? ” He began to wail. The driver ran over, breaking through the trees, and gave me a terrible look. Half like I was a slug, half like I was a god. He shuffled over and set his hands on Thomass heaving shoulders. “Im sorry, maam. Hes just not up for you anymore. Cant keep up. Wed have told you if wed known it was you. Here. ” He fished through his pockets and pulled out two hundred dollar bills. “Partial refund. ” I recoiled. Just give it to him. ” Thomas shook his head. “We all make sacrifices, Rachel. Remember we all make sacrifices. ” “Wait, Thomas –” I took the bill and scribbled my address on it. “Here. If you ever need anything –” He swatted the bill away and started screaming as the driver chuckled to himself. “No! No! I know where they took you! They arent taking me too! You cant make me! You cant fucking make me! ” The driver wrapped both arms around Thomass narrow chest and hauled him away. I stood numbly. The door slammed, cutting off Thomass shrieks, and the car started and rumbled away. After a while, I walked home. When I got inside, a calm, silky voice said: Visiting prostitutes now, are we. I screamed and whirled around. Michel sat on the sofa. Waiting for me. I grabbed the doorknob, but he said: Don't leave. I won't. I whispered. Michel regarded me for a long while, almost impossibly still. “He isnt the man you remember. ” “Nothing is what I remember. ” He watched me carefully, eyes glittering strangely. They looked green this afternoon, perfectly green. No trace of blue in either eye. “How did you know? ” “How did I know what? ” Rage reared up, but it was swiftly overtaken by hopeless guilt. “That I went to see him. ” “I know everything, Rachel. ” “How? ” He didn't respond right away. The longer he stared, the weaker I felt, physically and emotionally. And tired. So, so tired. My knees were rubbery, the muscles in my thighs incredibly sore. The couch looked soft and inviting - But he was sitting on it Still, if I sat, Id be able to rest, to gather my thoughts while But hes there, I needed to stay away, needed to keep my distance in case he I was tired, though. So, so, catastrophically tired. I shuffled to the sofa and settled down beside him. My head dropped back, sinking into the cushions. It was as soft as Id imagined, incredibly comfortable and relaxing… And then it wasnt. I blinked, then shot up and scurried to the other end of the room. I must have crossed some invisible threshold, because the dead women suddenly started moaning from the office. “Get away from there. ” Michel beckoned me tiredly. “They wake up when you get too close. ” “I don't give a shit about them! What did you do to me? Is that – thats what you did to me when Richard was -” My voice caught in my throat. I felt like I was being strangled. “What are you? ” Emotion flickered across his otherwise inscrutable expression, too quickly for me to identify. “Im a Bluebird. ” I waited, afraid to speak; if I said the wrong thing, surely hed cloud my mind up again. So I waited, even though it was hard. The flatness in his face frightened me, along with the preternatural shine in his eyes. It was too much, and finally I gave in. “What does that mean? ” “It means I can influence your thoughts and actions. ” God help me, I laughed. He watched patiently, with the lazy, relaxed concentration of a cat. When I finished, he said: “I can make you see things that arent there, and not see things that are. I can make you hurt, or I can make you happy. If necessary, with a great deal of effort, I can make you move even if you resist. That is why we are paired. I set the stage and you perform. ” The voices of Thomas and my doppelganger merged: All the worlds a stage. You see only what he wants you to see. “For who? ” He leaned back, settling against the cushions. “You dont want to know. ” “Bullshit! ” “No, ” he said evenly. “Rachel, I see and sense every part of you. Right now, at this time, I know for a fact that you do not actually want to know this answer. ” He rubbed his mouth absently. This small indication of anxiety made me feel a little calmer. “How did you know I saw Thomas? You knew before I came in. ” He drummed his fingers along the back of the sofa. “If I focus, and if you are open, I can see where you are, get an idea of what you are doing and who you are with. Now listen. ” Like I had a choice. “I can influence you, sometimes to the point of absolute control. I can see you. I can sense your feelings. But I cannot hear you. ” That flicker of emotion again. Relief, with…what? Triumph? “Do you understand? ” I nodded, even though I didnt. He leaned back. “What did Thomas tell you? ” “You want me to just give you the only information you dont know? ” “No, I want to help you, but youre making it extremely difficult and were approaching the end of the line with the people who matter. What did Thomas tell you? ” “Whatever it means, that Im consecrated to the Bull. ” “Your body, not you. We made sure of that. ” “Whats the difference? ” He was impassive again, a bright-eyed sphinx in the waning light. “You were taken as a child and subjected to all manner of horrors. This was intentional. It was meant to break you apart. It worked. Like many broken victims, you… compartmentalized. To the point you effectively became two distinct people. ” My head swam. “A…split personality? ” “Disassociation to preserve your wellbeing and what I guess youd call your spirit. It ensured that you remained yourself. The…other…” The hesitation in his voice, the utter, hateful darkness, made my heart seize. Images of a golden bull swept my minds eye. “It was a joint creation between you and our owners. ” His eyes finally dimmed. “And me. ” “I dont understand. ” “When children are broken, they have four potential pathways. You were marked for the worst of these. ” That golden palace. That filthy arena filled with children. A young boy surrounded by naked men, weeping as a horned shadow blotted the lights. “But you – you, not your other – defied expectations and made it very clear, very quickly, that you are something else. “ Yes, something else. Portals and violet leaves, hallucinatory skies and black oceans churning with incomprehensible gods. “This quality saved your life. Other discoveries followed, each one making you more and more and more valuable, until it was obvious you were important asset in their arsenal. ” “Why am I important? ” “The water in that place, in the sea? It heals everything. Only you can carry it out. I try, but it evaporates the moment I return. ” I thought of the arena, of poor Thomas plucking that feathery violet leaf from my fingers. “They didnt know that then, though. ” “No. At first, they kept you simply because you were amusingly mercenary, and then curiously hardy. They expected you to die. I expected you to die. Do you know why you are alive? Do you remember? ” “The leaf, ” I answered. “It saved Thomas, too, didnt it? ” Numbness settled over me like a suffocating blanket. I wondered if the numbness was mine, or Michels. Maybe, in his way, he was trying to protect me. “It healed us, after…after what they did. “No one knew why you were alive. You two were the first to last until…” He shuddered involuntarily, another sign of weakness. Real, or manufactured to garner my sympathy? “Satiation. ” “What were they doing to us? ” The words were so blunt it was almost comical: “It was a ritual sacrifice. They put all of you in the pit until one of you kills the rest. Usually the solution only occurs to a single child, sometimes to none at all. But you and Thomas came to the same conclusion. ” No, I thought; Thomas only came to the conclusion after watching me. “I know, ” Michel said, startling me badly. “But I could see you were attached to him, so I lied for you. ” “Then what happened? After we survived? ” “You compartmentalized even further, funneling every part, every feeling, every impulse, every memory of the creature they created into a separate entity. An other. Had I been myself, Id have stopped you, but I wasnt myself, any more than you were. ” Gooseflesh rippled all across my flesh, feeling like bugs. Worms, burrowing through my skin into my heart. “Why would you have been able to stop that process? ” “Because I trained you. Or rather, my other trained your other. ” Rage and terror descended on me. Images - memories – threatened to surface, horrifying things that Id forgotten for a reason, that the sea had drawn out because they were living wounds. “Its far worse, ” Michel said, “than what you are thinking. Try to not remember. ” He slid off the sofa and approached. I backed away immediately. “Theres no point in remembering. Those people wear our bodies but they arent us. We hid them, separated our true selves from them, for a reason. ” Unbidden, I thought of my doppelganger. Rotten yet alive, burning with fury and helpless, hopeless hate. Hes one of you, shed said. I hate y – Michel reared back as if burned. All composure broke, leaving him trembling and teary-eyed. Fresh bruises I hadnt noticed snaked up from under his collar. With a miserable burst of clarity, I realized his composure hadnt broken; he didnt have any composure at all. Hed been manipulating my senses, making me perceive an assured serenity that didnt exist. In spite of everything, that broke my heart. “I took you to the sea as soon as I could. ” His voice trembled. “They wouldnt let me take you immediately. They thought the Bull would – would –” His shoulders heaved, and he drew a deep breath. “I convinced them otherwise. I dont know how; I think they were simply desperate. For centuries theyve been…doing what it is they do…and in a matter of years your ways did more for them than millennia of their old ways. So I got my way, and I brought you back. ” He reached for me. I wanted to give in, wanted to hold him and be held, but I had another question. “Thomas said he reported me missing. He asked about my baby. ” “They took the child. Before you – before I –” He broke off, blinking tears away. Nausea rolled over me like the tide, along with a dangerous, suffocating fuzziness. “Before you killed me. ” I sifted through my memories for any hint of an infant, but found nothing. “What happened to it? ” “They took it, ” he repeated. “And then? ” “I dont know. ” “How can you not know? ” “I dont –” He broke off. “Its the way it is, Rachel. It wasnt even our first. ” I thought back to the paperwork, the records that became blank paper the moment Michel touched me. Strange susurrations filled the air, increasingly frantic. Whispers. And they were, I finally realized, coming from me. “No, no, no, no, no, we have to, we have to, we have to go, we have to tell someone, we have to go to the police, Michel, we have to –” “The police? How did that turn out for you last time? ” The sergeants laughing face flickered through my mind. Thats good. Awesome. It ever comes to it and they cant help their golden girl, youll be fine. “Forget the police. The Sheriff, the…the state, the goddamned Feds, fucking Interpol –” “What do you think we're dealing with, Rachel? Do you really believe this kind of corruption starts at the lowest levels? It starts high, high, high, with people who can pay for complicity and silence. The higher you go, the worse it gets. You lost this battle thousands of years before you were born. ” “Shut up! ” I screamed. “Everyone everywhere is not corrupt! ” “Youre right, ” he said, and I was so shocked I looked up. “Then whats stopping you? Whats stopping us? ” He gave me a dark, almost smug look. “There are repercussions for spewing what will sound like utter nonsense to a society specifically conditioned to disbelieve anything that isnt mundane. Youll be branded a lunatic, a pariah, a fool. Then youll be killed, or youll be broken down into nothing and left to rot like Thomas. ” He suddenly surged forward. I retreated again, smacking into the wall as he smashed both hands down on either side of my head. “But it gets better. Even if someone believes you, even if you bring incontrovertible proof at the exact right time to the exact right people, they have one last defense, Rachel, one last ace in the goddamn hole. ” His eyes burned, nearly luminescent in the dim light. “I cant wait for you to remember anymore. I dont actually believe youll allow yourself to remember, which is why we have those –” He pointed toward the hallway, to the office where the dead women lay – “squalling every time you pass. If they didnt jog your memory, nothing will. So its time. ” He pushed himself off the wall and disappeared into his office. Outside, the sun fell behind the canyon. Shadows lengthened and the room abruptly darkened. Michel emerged, carrying an unmarked jewel case. “Sit. ” He put the disc in to play and left me alone to watch it. It started with darkness. Flame flickered into being: a candle, then ten, then a hundred, lighting in a spiraled array, seeming to float on a sea of darkness. It was beautiful, mesmerizing. Then part of the floor burst into flame, a ring around a familiar pit. The fire illuminated dozens of people in robes and animal masks, arranged into a shape that looked deliberate yet insane. I couldnt look at it for long. Another susurration, a cloud of whispers that turned into chanting. The firelight suddenly flared, reflecting off a massive figure at the back: a golden bulls head, horns tangled with strands of gemstones, standing before an altar. A pillar stood in front of it, topped with a bright torch. A woman approached from the opposite direction, shunting a small body ahead of her. A child, staggering sleepily through the chanting ranks. The bull moved forward. The body was a womans, naked except for the headdress and the filmy strands of red cloth drifting from her hips. The child continued his trek, wordless and calm. I saw tears on his face. I thought of Michel (to the point of absolute control) but not for long. The child stopped at the altar. The bull inclined her head, a mockery of a bow, then removed the headdress and set it reverently on the pillar. The torch filled the bulls mouth and eyes with flames, imbuing the thing with a hideous parody of life. The woman bowed for real this time, then turned and exposed her face. It was me. There is no point describing what came next. I clapped my hands over my mouth, stifling screams. I felt hands on my shoulder. Blonde hair flickered at the corners of my vision. “Dont look, ” Christine whispered. She stroked my hair. Her fingers were clean and whole, unmarred by burns or blisters. “It isnt you. ” It may not be me, but it is part of me. I created it. Michel told me as much. I simply excised the rot in my heart and locked it away in a box. Its separate from what I like to think of as me. But its still me. By the time the video cut to black, I was prostrate on the floor. I lay there what felt like a long time, aching and trying to make a plan. Finally, Michel came back. When he removed the disc from the player, I stood up unsteadily. “Can I see it? ” I asked. “Why? ” “Just…I dont know. ” My voice broke. He gave me an unreadable look, then held it out. When my fingers touched it, I shuddered. Michel turned away, pretending to study the wall. I retreated slowly, trying to mime purposelessness by winding a meandering path toward the door. Then I opened it and bolted out into the night. Crickets sang. A gentle breeze rustled leaves overhead. It was colder than I expected, verging on uncomfortable, but it felt profoundly pure in the way only crisp cool air can. I decided to take the video to the police. Who cared if I went to prison? I needed to. Hell, I needed to die. And before that happened, I would make all of this stop forever. Id barely made it to the road before I juddered to a full, involuntary halt. Michel approached, gravel grinding under his feet, until he was literally breathing down my neck. I closed my eyes, expecting – and hoping – for the worst. But he only snatched the disc from my hand. Then he turned and went back into the house, slamming the door behind him. I sat down and wept for hours, long after the moon and risen and my tears turned the ground to mud. Then I stood up, wincing as my bones creaked and sore muscles flexed, and went into my husband's house. I'm not done, but I have to make Michel think I am. I did it before - I think that's why they killed me in the first place - and I'll do it again. I'm going to save Thomas, too. I'm going to find him and take him to the sea. And I guess we'll go from there.

In all the decades Clint Eastwood has produced greatness, this is his finest movie. Every actor on the set poured out every bit of soul and emotion they had. Every one of the main characters gave an award worthy performance. However, I would say Paul Walter Hauser is the life blood of the movie. I think every free person could identify with his anguish. This could be anyone of us destroyed by a powerful agency who abuses their power as the FBI clearly did. It is still happening today and the world is watching. Tom Brokaw's suggestion (saying on Air as a Trusted NBC Nightly News Anchor) that basically the FBI had the Evidence against Jewell and it was just a matter of days before Jewell's arrest. Sad that this was another example of Mob Think. Kind of like Oklahoma City a year earlier when early on everyone was looking for a (2nd Bomber) foreign terrorist when it was really a Domestic plot.
